The Communications Manager, US will support the day-to-day external communications efforts of The Economist in the US market. Reporting to the Director of Communications, US this role will be responsible for amplifying The Economist’s world-class journalism and premium products through proactive communications strategies.
You are a news junky with extensive media relations experience, you have a deep understanding of the evolving media landscape and have experience with talent relations.
Main Responsibilities
- Develop innovative communications strategies that elevate The Economist’s premium journalism and products in the US market and create buzz among USA consumers.
- Leverage US news cycles, bringing an understanding of fast-moving consumer / digital culture, to cut through with creative campaigns and tactics.
- Work effectively across teams and with external agencies to execute on communications strategies that garner measurable results.
- Maintain existing relevant media relationships and proactively foster new ones based on The Economist’s editorial and business priorities.
- Bring a collaborative spirit and willingness to support various projects depending on the needs of the business.
- Skilled writer who can craft compelling messages and produce excellent external-facing materials.
- Monitor and track press external placements and compile regular media reports.
- Staff interviews and provide constructive feedback.
Experience / Qualifications
- In-house or agency experience with roles supporting, designing and executing on communications campaigns that target US audiences.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities while staying responsive to the news cycle.
- Comfortable working with senior leadership and communicating effectively across departments.
- Track record of delivering influential communications campaigns with clearly measurable outcomes.
- Passion for news and a deep knowledge of the evolving US media landscape and publishing industry.
- Exceptional network of media contacts across top tier news and consumer press in the US.
- Superb writing skills and the ability to write effectively with short deadlines.
- Creative thinker who is not hesitant to bring new ideas to the table.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and an ability to navigate internally - experience working with senior leaders at large organizations.
- Familiarity with Muck Rack, Meltwater and media monitoring systems.
- Newsroom communications experience is a plus.
The expected base salary for this position ranges from $90,000.00 - $109,999.00. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Rather, salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
Please note this opportunity is located in NYC. The hired candidate will be required to work from our NYC office several days per week.
