Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for assessing potential human health effects from exposure to environmental contaminants at and around hazardous waste sites. The incumbent must possess a strong background in environmental science and knowledge of environmental toxicology, inducing occupational diseases—environmentally related illnesses, and current concepts on carcinogenicity, especially regarding human health risk assessments.

 

Prepares public health risk assessments and health consultation reports addressing public health impacts from exposure to chemical contaminants at hazardous waste sites. the review and analysis of health outcome data and epidemiological information to determine the nature of adverse health effects in the populations living near hazardous waste sites. Assessments include but are not limited to integrating analytical data, chemical profiles, selection of indicator chemicals and deviation of acceptable medical and chemical levels, and prediction of public health impacts. Prepares reports.

 

Works independently to develop, coordinate, implement, analyze, and monitor environmental programs assessing potential human exposure to contaminants.

 

Serves as liaison, consults with, and provides technical assistance to the public, county health departments, state laboratories, universities, and other state or federal agencies regarding environmental toxicology and contamination. Provides interpretation of pertinent public health statutes, rules, policies, and standards.

 

Coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies on specific projects. Participates in the planning, developing, and implementing interagency agreements, programs, and research projects related to assessing human health risks and potential impacts from exposure to environmental contaminants. Represents the department at public meetings, hearings, and workshops and provides oversight for implementing a statewide environmental health program. Assists state and federal agencies in developing environmental standards and risk communication to mitigate or minimize human health impact from exposure to environmental contaminants.

 

Assists Program Administrator in managing programmatic grant activities in accordance with program requirements, including preparing grant application packages, planning and scheduling projects and activities, and preparing grant reports. Makes recommendations to the program administrator on proposed and existing projects and activities, undergoing review for consistency with state laws, regulations, and policies. Develops and recommends program objectives to the administrator.

 

Serves as a programmatic expert on geographical information systems (GIS) mapping and analysis. Prepares high-quality, site-specific maps and figures for program reports. Leads, manages and coordinates specific GIS data analysis to support programmatic goals.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge background in Environmental Science.
  • Knowledge with risk assessment principles and practices.
  • Ability to research and disseminate technical and scientific literature.
  • Skills in excellent writing.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Programs.
  • Ability in utilization of databases and related software applications.
