Job Summary

This position is for a Accounting Analyst within the Asset Accounting department of Duke Energy.  The role is responsible for providing financial analysis, accounting, and reporting support related to fixed assets, asset retirement obligations (AROs), nuclear decommissioning trust funds, and various regulatory assets and liabilities.  The group also coordinates and provides reporting and analysis related to fixed assets that are used within rate cases and various regulatory initiatives and filings across multiple jurisdictions within Duke Energy. 

This position requires a blended knowledge of technical and functional financial reporting and analysis skills.  The analyst will work closely with teammates and managers on various accounting activities including monthly journal entry preparation, account reconciliations, financial statement analysis, ARO evaluations and settlements, and preparation of internal and external reporting.  The analyst will also be responsible for preparing reports and information used within regulatory filings and rate cases including standard reporting requirements as well as responding to data requests. This position works to ensure that accounting and reporting in this area meets FERC, GAAP and State Regulatory requirements.

This role will require strong organization skills, project and time management skills, attention to detail, and collaboration within Asset Accounting, Rates and Regulatory, Finance, and other areas of the Company.  The analyst will interact frequently with various groups to support business transactions, decisions, and filing requirements.  The position will help to analyze and research ad-hoc requests and develop reporting to support data requests.  This position will work with moderately complex asset accounting and regulatory matters; therefore, strong analytical skills and the ability to exercise judgment are essential.  Employees at this level are expected to work independently and act as a resource for less experienced employees.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, analysis, and reporting for balance sheet and income statement accounts primarily related to asset retirement obligations, nuclear decommissioning, and regulatory assets

  • Prepare workpapers and other financial schedules that support internal and external reporting (including SEC and FERC financials)

  • Interact with Finance and Operational contacts to understand key operational decisions and changes which could impact accounting, including ARO remeasurements

  • Prepare and review various regulatory and rate case requests across the regulated jurisdictions within Duke Energy, with focus on completing deliverables to meet deadlines

  • Prepare and review data requests, discovery requests, and regulatory reporting requirements ensuring that responses and reports are accurate and complete

  • Assist with preparation of depreciation studies; including managing third party consultants, providing data requirements, and consulting on questions or changes as needed.  Responsible for implementation of new studies once approved. 

  • Implement accounting impacts resulting from regulatory orders

  • Perform research on various GAAP and regulatory accounting issues and preparation of accounting position papers, as needed

  • Work with internal and external auditors, providing necessary information and addressing questions, as needed

  • Understand and maintain proper business and financial processes to ensure adherence to internal controls and policies.  Assist in SOX documentation updates and testing.

  • Champion process improvements to produce efficiencies at all stages of the accounting process

  • Overtime may be required during monthly/quarterly/annual closing processes as well as around regulatory filing and discovery periods
