Start your career with Pasco County Utilities as a Utilities Mechanical Specialist Trainee! This is an entry position where you will learn the fundamental duties and technical work related to the inspection, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Pasco County owned well sites, potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water treatment facilities, and related equipment. 

***Pasco County provides a career path for advancement from a Utilities Mechanical Specialist Trainee to Utilities Mechanical Specialist I, Utilities Mechanical Specialist II, Utilities Mechanical Specialist III, and Utilities Mechanical Specialist IV when certifications, license, experience, and performance requirements and expectations are met.

Examples of duties

The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive.  The omission of specific statements of duties is not excluded from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.  Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:
  • Assists in installations, modifications, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of water, wastewater collection and treatment, and reuse systems. This includes motors - fractional to 500HP, motor operated valves, various styles of check valves, altitude valves, control valves, air release valves, plug valves, submersible pumps, vertical turbine pumps, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, close couple pumps, diaphragm pumps, piston pumps, aeration blower equipment, mixers, mechanical bar screens, gear drives, compressed air systems, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, utility box/boom trucks, and other equipment to pull pumps, motors and equipment for preventative maintenance, repair, or replacement. 
  • Operates and maintains variety of hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, meters, and specialized test equipment needed to maintain equipment in water, wastewater, and reuse systems.
  • Assists in identifying potential problems, troubleshooting, and taking necessary corrective action in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and conveyor systems.
  • Assists in maintaining accurate records on treatment plant equipment, pumping stations, wells and reuse distribution equipment for maintenance and repair purposes through means of county’s computer management maintenance software (CMMS) and spreadsheet records.
  • Completes assigned daily work orders. 
  • Assists in performing routine preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists in performing emergency repair of water, wastewater and reuse systems including all equipment related and facilities as necessary.
  • Regular Attendance is required for this position.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.
  • Performs related work as required. 

Qualifications

  • Ability and knowledge to use a computer and related software., 
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and perform maintenance work. 
  • Ability in the use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to drive a utility box truck.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and detailed maintenance records and reports.  
  • Ability to read for comprehension.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with considerable independence.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, operations staff, and the public.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Supplemental information

PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects.  Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Ability to frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time. Must be available for overtime work as required. Work location my vary for this location. Ability to work outside, occasionally under adverse conditions.
