Job Description

The NBC News bureau in Washington DC is looking for a candidate to oversee our Core Technology infrastructure, including AVID content acquisition and editing systems, along with our IP Telecom system.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work alone and as part of a team and have extensive experience in the on-going maintenance, support and troubleshooting of various critical IT, AVID and telecom systems in a broadcast facility. The role includes working on projects and requires on-site shift work.  You will work with a dedicated team of Maintenance technicians supporting our 24/7/365 news operations. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide top-layer Maintenance Support to our newsroom systems, as well as hands-on design and implementation of new technologies, while working closely with multiple support teams across all systems and services in a 24/7 environment
  • Oversee our DC based AVID support team and work in tandem with NBC’s overall AVID support team across the network 
  • Expertise in newsroom systems, particularly Avid Interplay Workgroups and iNews is required
  • Perform software installations and updates
  • Track issues through resolution, while communicating with both engineering, operational and editorial management
  • Maintain and Support the Core IT network infrastructure. Expertise with Cisco networking switch gear configuration and support is requited.
  • Experience with IP telecom systems is also required.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a college degree with 5+ years’ experience with proven expertise in broadcast media and systems support
  • Experience with modern television production methods and equipment
  • Working knowledge of HD video and audio signal manipulation, and signal routing as well as transcoding systems design, configuration, and management
  • Extensive knowledge of Window Server/Client OS 
  • Willingness to work overtime and/or extended shifts, on weekdays or weekends with short notice
  • Able to travel for offsite events both domestic and international
  • Must be willing to work in Washington DC
  • Must be able to lift equipment packages weighing up to 70 pounds
  • Manage team of 3 direct reports.

Must have system level trouble shooting knowledge of the following hardware, software and technology:

  • Avid (Interplay Production/Archive and MAM, Network, Storage- Nexis)
  • File Ingest with Telestream - Vantage, Root6, Aspera, Adobe (Prelude, Media Encoder)
  • Traditional Broadcast equipment such as, Tape Machines, A/V Monitoring, Signal Flow (DA’s, MUX/DEMUX, Conversion, Jack Fields, QC Stations), KVM, Tuners, Fiber and other computer/server systems associated with news production.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with live compression IP transport systems and protocols (UDP, RTP, SRT, RIST, Zixi) as well as various error correction technologies and applications.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, Cisco network infrastructure, routing techniques & IP Security concepts. CCNA Level Experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of Palo Alto Firewalls

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong Operational familiarity with broadcast production, workflows, video productions systems, including knowledge of non-linear editing tools (particularly Avid Media Composer).
  • Advanced understanding of Windows operating systems, as well as Virtualization protocols
  • Knowledge of Windows Active Directory and automated software deployment such as SCCM
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong desire to learn and cross-train in new technologies and passion to maintain current knowledge of relevant technologies
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, working independently and as part of a team in a collaborative manner
  • Demonstrate strong skills in the areas of analysis, organization and escalation
  • Excellent communication skills, with a cool levelheaded approach
  • Able to clearly & succinctly communicate actions and/or next
