Position Overview

As the functional Engineering Manager within the Drives and Propulsion team at Mercury, you will lead a team of engineers and CAD designers in the design, development, validation planning and completion, and production release of outboard and sterndrive midsection components and subsystems.  This primarily includes outboard or sterndrive transom and driveshaft housing components and sub-assemblies, and bolted joints to adjacent subsystems such as the outboard powerhead and lower unit. This group owns the overall outboard structural performance requirements and validation.   This position is primarily on-site for most working days in our Fond du lac, Wisconsin world headquarters, with flexibility to work a hybrid on-site/off-site schedule up to two days each working week, as appropriate.

Essential Functions:  

  • Lead a team of engineers and designers who are responsible for the design, development, validation planning and completion, and production release of outboard midsection subsystems and components.

  • Identify risk to programs early with intent to mitigate in efficient manner

  • Accountable for the performance and results of the Midsection engineering team

  • Complete team performance reviews, growth plans, and hiring decisions

  • Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges

  • Provides technical guidance to employees, colleagues and/or customers

  • Plan Midsection team human resources for future projects

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional departments and other design teams to proactively address risks and opportunities

  • Maintain a technical knowledge of manufacturing and design practices to guide and develop component optimization

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

  • 10+ years of experience in component design and/or product development

  • 5+ years of experience leading a team

  • Experience managing/guiding designs through tier one suppliers via functional requirements and specifications. 

  • Experience in development of structural castings, including design considerations and manufacturing processes.

  • New product development experience including all aspects of product life cycle from concept development to production release, and production support.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to present technical information to a cross-functional audience.

  • Demonstrated success working with cross-functional teams on complex technical challenges.   

  • Demonstrated understanding of design validation planning, and related risk evaluation methods such as DFMEA.

  • Understanding and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and ability to review its application on detailed engineering drawings.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Project management experience including resource planning and estimation

  • Direct experience and knowledge of outboard propulsion and systems

  • Demonstration and a passion for team building and mentorship

  • Experience in engineering testing and data acquisition

  • Knowledge and demonstration of lean six sigma tools and methods, or design for six sigma tools

The anticipated pay range for this position is $115,700 - $185,900 annually.  The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location.  In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus program.
