Job Description

Ares’ Alternative Credit strategy targets asset-focused investments generating cash flows from diversified asset pools, investing across liquid and illiquid opportunities up and down the capital stack in sectors including but not limited to specialty finance, net leases, structured products, and cash flow streams. Alternative Credit has a broad range of sub-strategies designed to be client-focused and solutions-based with three main formats: pure play, customized and flagship funds.

Ares Alternative Credit have committed to donating between 5% and 10% of the carried interest earned within certain strategies to global health and education charities and also have launched the Promote Giving initiative where we get other participating managers to commit to donating 5% of their promote—over time—to philanthropic causes of their choosing.

We are currently seeking an experienced Principal to join the Alternative Credit (asset based finance) team focused on Portfolio Management and Treasury functions.  This is a new multi-disciplinary role working across the Alternative Credit business on financings, treasury, analytics, risk, valuation, hedging, reporting and quantitative development.  The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer of the Alternative Credit business and requires extensive collaboration and coordination with the investment teams, portfolio managers, asset managers, investor relations, finance & accounting, investment operations and capital solutions teams.  Candidates should have significant experience with investment modeling  (for investment grade and non-IG investments) and fixed income analytics (e.g. yield measurements, duration, convexity, OAS).  Strong communication, analytical and project management skills are required.  Candidates should have significant knowledge of structured credit and securitizations.

Primary Functions and Essential Responsibilities:

  • Treasury:  optimize liquidity, capital calls, cash and borrowing (and borrowing bases) with Finance & Accounting team
  • Analytics, Risk, Hedging & Valuation: analyze portfolio and individual investments for various risks; review hedging; guide team on financial modeling and analytics (for investment grade and non-IG investments); assist with valuation and internal ratings processes
  • Reporting: work with team to develop internal and external reporting
  • Quantitative Development: work with team manage development priorities, including SQL databases, python apps and AI initiatives
  • Project Management:  manage various team projects to further strengthen or enhance our investment and business operations processes.

Experience Required:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Candidates should have significant knowledge of structured credit and securitizations.

General Requirements:

  • Ability to reduce complex problems and models into key drivers.  Ability to combine disparate datasets and assumptions.
  • Strong intellect with outstanding quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
  • Significant experience with investment modeling and fixed income analytics (e.g. yield measurements, duration, convexity, OAS). 
  • Strong knowledge of finance and accounting
  • Ability to manage borrowing base credit facilities with diverse collateral.
  • Ability to understand privately originated investments. 
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated and driven.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment, and with senior professionals.
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills, and a professional, polished demeanor.
  • Evidence of intellectual curiosity, creative problem-solving skills, and adaptability.
  • Strong communication, analytical and project management skills are required.
