Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Bioconjugation Downstream Scientist Co-Op this Spring 2026, located in Malvern, PA.

Research & Development Co-Op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life as an R&D Co-Op:

The R&D Co-Op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-Op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

The typical Co-Op term is from Jan 2026– Jun 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

The TDS Proteins Development API organization is seeking a candidate interested in protein process development. In this role, the Co-Op will...

  • Support the development of high-throughput conjugation reactions for antibody conjugates using bifunctional chelator-linkers, non-potent molecules, and enzymes.
  • Conduct bench-scale experiments with both established and novel conjugation chemistries to attach small molecules such as bifunctional chelator-linkers and chromophores, etc. The experiments will evaluate reaction kinetics in the presence or absence of enzymes, assess process performance and product quality, and address potential challenges.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
  • Provide other project support as needed.

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioprocess Sciences, and related majors are preferred.
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or equivalent experience, Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience. For students pursuing their Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, Juniors or Seniors are preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.
  • Completion of Undergraduate Freshmen year at an accredited University is required.

 

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g., FI, H1-B status)
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results
  • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities

 

Preferred:

  • Basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis
