Work Schedule: Night Shift, Monday-Friday, 10p-6:30a

Process, embed, cut, and stain tissue sections in preparation for pathologist microscopic examination by following section policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

Perform duties of a histologist to assist in daily workload by performing assigned tasks.

  • Routine H & E and special stains meet quality standards by feedback from the pathologists.
  • Accurately perform and evaluate staining quality of patient tissue slides.
  • No occurrence when a block is exhausted unless directed by a pathologist to do so.
  • No unacceptable quality of slide preparation.
  • Accurately perform, evaluate appropriateness and report tests/analyses requested on patient specimens.
  • Uses organization and prioritization skills in achieving workload demands.
  • Quality control is completed and documented 100% of the time.
  • Compliant per PPE guidelines 100% of the time.
  • Routine maintenance is completed and documented 100% of the time.
  • Achieves section/organization quality goals.
  • Assist with completion of quality control and quality assurance activities.
  • Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Technical Coordinator, Section Leader, or Medical Director(s) to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.

Develop, implement, and document orientation, training, and education to ensure employee competence, provide excellent services and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.

  • Assists in training new and existing staff to including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill/training checklists.
  • Organizational and departmental competencies are completed 100% of the time.
  • Communicates process/procedural changes in a timely manner and educates staff on the need for change.
  • All training documentation is completed 100% of the time.
  • Evidence that new procedures and procedure revisions are read and understood.

Perform titrations on all existing immunohistochemical reagents by following all laboratory policies, procedures, and standard references

  • Immunohistochemical stains meet quality benchmarks and standards by feedback from the pathologists.
  • All titrations are accurate and stain adequately.
  • Adequate numbers of controls are prepared.

Assist in preparation for and participate in inspections, proficiency testing, and properly maintain records to fulfill the requirements of the accrediting agencies (i.e. College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) by following the provided protocol. Prepare for and participate in inspections, proficiency testing, Quality Assurance activities, properly maintain records, prepare and update section policies and procedures to fulfill the requirements of the accrediting agencies (i.e. CAP, JCAHO) by following the provided protocol.

  • College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection will meet the standards as delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations by review of inspection results.
  • Assist with correcting all CAP deficiencies with the deadline by review of inspection results.
