Job Description

 

The New York Times is looking for a strong graphics editor who will create interactive graphics for The Times’s coverage of day-to-day weather and extreme weather events. 

This graphics editor will work with fellow designers, developers and editors, both on the weather data team and Graphics and Interactive News, to produce analytical journalism and create new visual approaches to weather coverage. Projects will very likely include live displays of weather data, interactive maps, statistical visualizations, data analysis, animations, and creative approaches that don't yet exist. You will pursue original reporting and will exercise journalistic and visual judgment to ensure the accuracy and clarity of their work.

This role reports to the Weather Data Editor.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Basic qualifications: 

  • At least three years of relevant experience

  • Expertise in web development, including JavaScript, HTML and CSS

  • Strong visual and interactive design skills with a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion and user behavior

  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience with geospatial data in a variety of formats

  • Technical creativity, curiosity and versatility

  • Experience working with, analyzing or visualizing weather or climate data is a plus

  • Genuine excitement about — and experience with — finding, exploring and transforming data sets

  • Experience coding in Svelte

  • Experience with working collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team

  • Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $140,000.00.
