Mission and Responsibilities:
The Technical Search team’s mission is to explore and improve all the ways we can use search channels to reach audiences and develop stronger connections with our readers in close partnership with the newsroom.
We are looking for a creative and experienced full-stack (JS, Go Lang) engineer to focus on systems and techniques that enhance our content and page structures for search engine performance (SEO optimization), an essential lever for our audience growth.
You will report to the Engineering Director, Storytelling. You’ll be part of the Storytelling group’s work to deliver innovation at the speed of the news, and The New York Times’ mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will Work in collaboration with the team’s Tech Lead, other engineers, SEO Managers, Audience Editors, and others across the organization to identify reusable and maintainable technical strategies to improve our search relevance.

You will Lead the development and creation of features from technical design through completion by building reliable, secure, scalable, and observable features.

You will Find opportunities to improve the quality and consistency of our page and site architecture to make our systems more clear, unified, and legible to search users and engines.

You will Create strategies for delivering new capabilities while paying down technical debt and investing in engineering excellence.
Basic Qualifications:
-
3+ years of experience with the inner workings of a web browser: how it makes requests, how a page is processed, how code executes.

1+ years of experience understanding of HTTP status codes, caching, cookies, and web APIs, and a basic understanding of security (CSRF, SSL certs, security headers).

1+years of experience in JavaScript (we use React) or Golang or a similar modern programming language.

1+ years of experience with cloud-based (AWS/GCP) architecture and technologies at scale.
Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in optimizing and monitoring website performance for both search engines and human users using best practices for page layout, structured data, and Core Web Vitals.

Expertise in the principles of web technologies as a series of interlinked documents, and how those documents are parsed and evaluated by search businesses.
