About the role

Description

The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct Faculty to teach an undergraduate, sophomore lab (51-269 Prototyping Lab: Environments II). This course is a technical and hands-on class introducing the tools and skills required for students to imagine, prototype, and test interactive and digitally-enhanced experiences taking place within physical environments. This prototyping lab course is complementary to the sophomore Environments studio course that runs concurrently. The specific course projects/tutorials will be crafted alongside the School of Design faculty teaching the studio and could be catered to the expertise of the adjunct teacher. This lab course has existing course materials that can be used for the spring 2024 semester.

 

The course meets in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-10:20am OR 10:30-12:20pm (time will be finalized to work with adjunct faculty’s schedule), starting on January 14th and ending on May 1st. The official academic calendar can be found here. There will likely be 7-10 undergraduate students enrolled in the course.

 

Adjunct teacher's responsibilities will include:

  1. 2-3 planning meetings in December/January (date/time TBD) with School of Design faculty members to discuss the course, projects, learning objectives, etc.

  2. Update of existing course syllabus, schedule, and project descriptions based on meetings.

  3. Coordinating with the Studio professor throughout the semester.

  4. Developing related course materials (e.g. prototyping demonstrations, relevant professional case studies) 

  5. Attending all classes: Tuesday/Thursday 8:30-10:20 am OR 10:30-12:20 pm (time will be finalized to work with adjunct faculty’s schedule), January 14 - May 1, 2024

  6. Being available for office hours outside of class time. Zoom or in-person; can be by appointment only. 

  7. Asynchronous feedback/grading after projects.

Qualifications

The School invites applicants with the following qualifications:

  1. A Masters degree, or a Bachelor’s degree plus teaching and/or professional practice experience, in design, architecture, HCI, or a related field.

  2. University-level teaching experience preferred.

  3. Experience in prototyping for interactions, including familiarity with interaction design tools and software.

  4. Experience in these areas:

  1. Rhino 3D modeling software, including 2D drawing, 3D modeling and rendering, output for 3D printing and laser cutting.

  2. Arduino and basic electronics and programming for physical computing. IoT and connected devices is a plus, but not required. 

  3. Unity 3D platform, including importing 3D models and output for digital projection. Scripting for Unity (C#) is a plus.
