Sr Software Engineer - Instrument Control - C#

We are looking for a highly driven and talented software engineer to join our sequencing instrument development team. This team creates new platform technologies to support Illumina’s growing fleet of DNA sequencers. The role will focus on developing software solutions that bridge between the hardware and informatics pipelines, including Illumina’s cloud ecosystems. Collaborating with engineers from various hardware, software, and UX disciplines is a daily occurrence.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop world-class software applications to control DNA Sequencing devices
- Ensure software architecture aligns with user needs to bring high-value products to market
- Leverage expertise in investigation and resolution of technical problems within the department
- Maintain awareness of industry trends and evaluate the applicability of new software technologies to the latest Sequencing platforms
- Drive innovation at a software product level and contributes ideas to software road mapping
- Lead investigation and resolution of technical problems within the sequencing instrument domain
- Debug complex issues involving timing, concurrency, and hardware interactions
Requirements:
- Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent experience
- Extensive knowledge and experience with C# and .NET
- Experience with C++, C, and embedded systems development
- Excellent understanding of object-oriented analysis and design
- Experience with developing software for hardware
- Strong algorithm design, optimization, and implementation skills
- Experience with Linux environments
- Solid understanding of object-oriented analysis and design, service-oriented architecture, and event-driven patterns
- Multi-threading, synchronization, and concurrent programming
- 5+ years of industry experience.
Desired:
- Experience with user interface development, web or desktop
- REST API design
- Background in imaging-related projects or optical systems
- Experience working on complex hardware systems involving optics, motors, or precision motion control
- Performance profiling and optimization
- CI/CD pipeline design and implementation
- Proficiency with Atlassian tools (Jira) and requirements management tools

The estimated base salary range for the Sr Software Engineer - Instrument Control - C# role based in the United States of America is: $129,400 - $194,000. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
