Job Summary:

Job Duties:

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Bucknell University invites applications for a one-year position in Arabic Studies at the Visiting Assistant Professor level beginning in August, 2025. We seek a teacher-scholar with a Ph.D. (or ABD) in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL), Arabic literature, and Arabic linguistics. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in language pedagogy and teaching methodologies. Additionally, applicants must possess native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English, as well as exhibit a high level of proficiency in Levantine Arabic. The successful candidate should also have a demonstrated commitment to liberal arts education. Teaching responsibilities will include Arabic language courses at all levels and courses in literature and/or culture. The teaching load is three courses per semester.

The successful candidate will teach six courses per year, including introductory to upper-level undergraduate language, literature, and culture courses in Arabic, as well as courses in English for non-majors and minors, and participate in service activities at the program and department levels. In that respect, the new hire will be expected to strengthen, enhance, and expand the competencies of our program and department and to engage in collaborations with faculty in various units on campus.

We encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education. Your application should establish your interest in working at a primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution. Include how your experiences, knowledge, skills, and/or past accomplishments will contribute to equitable and inclusive teaching, broadly defined as including classroom instruction, advising, mentoring, and other educational experiences.

Application materials must include a letter of interest, CV, and a statement of teaching philosophy. Applications are only accepted online through Bucknell’s Career Center site (careers.bucknell.edu). Candidates that progress through the interview process will be asked to submit contact information for three references so that we may obtain confidential letters of reference.

For additional information and to apply, please go to Bucknell’s career site (careers.bucknell.edu). Review of applications will begin on February 27th, 2025, and continue until filled. All inquiries on the specifics of the position should be addressed to Martin Isleem, Associate Professor and Director of Arabic Studies (martin.isleem@bucknell.edu).

As a faculty, we are committed to cultivating a spirit of collegiality and mutual respect and welcome fruitful and exciting new teaching and research collaborations. In addition to the many resources offered by the University, our teaching and research initiatives are exceptionally well supported by funding opportunities within the program, which would be available to our new colleague in support of high-impact teaching initiatives, as well as innovative research-related travel.
