Technical Specialist Principal – Optical
Join Ball Aerospace’s Optics department as a Principal Technical Specialist! In this role, you will be an optical bonding and assembly expert and provide technical support for state-of-the-art optical remote sensing systems and other spaceflight hardware for a variety of applications.
What You'll Do:
- Assemble, test, and troubleshoot precision optical and opto-mechanical hardware, subsystems, components, instruments, and/or mechanisms, for research & development projects and flight applications.
- Perform bonding of optical and opto-mechanical hardware.
- Build custom optical and mechanical measurement setups.
- Perform optical alignment of complex optical sensors.
- Operate commercial and custom optical instrumentation.
- Make measurements and analyze data using basic math skills.
- Maintain electronic build records, required logs, records, and reports in accordance with Ball Aerospace policies/procedures and government regulations.
- Provide technical guidance to programs to ensure integration and test activities are executed efficiently and safely.
- Provide advanced instruction and training on specialized procedures and techniques to other employees and help develop processes and procedures essential to project needs.
- May plan and commit resources, coordinate, and lead the work of lower-level employees to assure task completion.
- Work in a team environment with engineers, technicians, and other program personnel.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
What You'll Need:
- High School diploma or equivalent plus 18 years or more related experience or a related 2-year technical degree and 16 years or more related experience.
- Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Bachelor’s or Master’s, may substitute for two years of related experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- A current, active TS/SCI security clearance is required.
- A working knowledge of optical technology, hands-on experience in optical component integration and characterization, and a mechanical aptitude for working with delicate opto-mechanical hardware.
- Extensive optical bonding experience with a proven record of bonding and processing optics in a cleanroom environment is required.
- Experience working on space-based optical systems.
- Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical assembly drawings.
