Job Description
We’re looking for a Senior Audience Strategy Editor for Newsletters to oversee the Houston Chronicle’s email strategy, working to reach new audiences, deepen loyalty with casual readers, and retain our subscribers with a suite of compelling, must-read newsletters that span a variety of topics.
The Senior Audience Strategy Editor for Newsletters will oversee and improve our existing newsletter portfolio, grow the audience for these products and develop and evaluate proposals to launch new ones. The strategist must be comfortable curating, writing and editing newsletters, as well as collaborating with Hearst’s Content Strategy and Consumer Marketing teams to build new features and experiments through email.
The Senior Audience Strategy Editor for Newsletters must have a keen grasp on how to measure success for a variety of newsletters and be able to use data to inform and shape our email strategy. The strategist will be responsible for owning our flagship newsletters, with an eye toward increasing engagement in the inbox and driving readers to dive deeper into our work. We’re looking for someone who can identify opportunities to launch new products or reimagine existing newsletters, and deeply understands our digital subscribers and how our newsletters can serve their needs.
The Responsibilities:
- Develop, execute and evaluate strategies that extend the reach of the Houston Chronicle via newsletters
- Write and edit newsletters, as needed, focusing on strategic ownership of The Chronicle’s 713 suite of daily newsletters
- Monitor performance of all Houston Chronicle newsletters, proactively suggesting A/B tests, recommending improvements to existing products, and sunsetting products that are underperforming
- Collaborate with writers and editors across the newsroom to develop new newsletters and optimize our current portfolio
- Serve as the lead project manager for newsletter launches
- Collaborate with Houston Chronicle’s marketing team, along with Hearst’s Consumer Marketing and Content Strategy teams, on email initiatives
- Provide regular insights and training to journalists on newsletter best practices so they can contribute to our portfolio
What will it take to be successful?
The successful candidate will be a collaborative leader with an expert grasp on newsletter strategy
Ideal candidates will be able to showcase one or more of the following; we do not expect candidates to be proficient in every area:
- At least three years of experience in a newsroom with at least one year of experience as a newsletter editor or strategist
- An obsession with digital metrics, with expertise in mining Google Analytics, Parse.ly, Chartbeat, Looker and other tools
- Ability to use analytics to make decisions that drive strategy and align with our overall newsroom goals
- Strong writing and editing skills, with keen attention to detail
- A collaborative self-starter who can organize, prioritize and work under pressure
- Experience using SailThru as a email service provider a plus
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism preferred
- Comfort with constantly evolving technology, and ability to adapt quickly and bring others along
