Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Associate Laboratory Director for Computing and Data Sciences (CDS).  This position is pivotal in developing a world-class program that advances the state of the art in artificial intelligence, high performance computing, applied mathematics, computer and computational sciences.  BNL's distinctive domain science strengths and premier facilities provides a unique opportunity to expand a portfolio of programs in a world class science laboratory environment that advances the mission of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research (DOE/ASCR) as well as the broader DOE-Office of Science mission.

The overarching objectives are to establish CDS as a leader in foundational computing, data science and mathematics research, and to establish a premier computing facility. The Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) will also be instrumental in developing, leading, and actively participating in national and international leadership initiatives in computing and data.  Reporting directly to the Laboratory Director, the ALD for Computing and Data Sciences will play a crucial role in shaping the future of scientific discovery at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Position Summary

The successful candidate will work closely with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and 5 other mission ALDs to chart the lab’s future in computing and data sciences.  The ALD will be a member of the Lab’s Senior Leadership Council and will be an integral member of the Lab’s leadership team to optimize both the CDS Directorate’s and the Laboratory’s overall missions. The ideal candidate will be an enterprise-wide, collaborative, and strategic leader.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Direct the BNL computing and data sciences effort to grow into a world-leading program that builds and expands on the Lab’s core capabilities.  Develop a powerful AI program that puts BNL at the forefront of this expanding field.
  • The ALD will be responsible for providing scientific leadership of large complex research programs with a focus on successful implementation and execution of scientific strategy for the CDS and the development of the Scientific Computing and Data Facility into a lab-wide facility. 
  • Lead computing and computational science research for the Laboratory including development and implementation of scientific strategies to attain national and international prominence.
  • Serve as the primary computing and computational sciences liaison to the DOE, DOE-Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research program, as well as other agencies, ensuring that the science and technology programs are meeting client needs.
  • Fulfill programmatic and program manager roles for the Laboratory in computing, data science and mathematics research by developing research programs and strategic partnerships with other national laboratories, with colleges and universities, other research institutions, and with public and private corporations.
  • Strengthen existing research programs, develop new programs, and drive strategic initiatives for the organization. Current initiatives include Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC), Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Architectures and Algorithms, Extreme Scalability, Knowledge Discovery, Cybersecurity, and Energy.
  • Work with the Laboratory Director and Leadership Team to identify and implement strategic research opportunities, including Laboratory-Directed Research and Development priorities.
  • Manage programmatic funds and discretionary investments for research and program development.  Act as steward for laboratory operations, facilities, capital, and equipment. Direct line management responsibilities for the CDS and Divisions under the CDS Directorate.
  • Maintain compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures as documented in the Lab’s business management system.
  • Implement management systems, operations, safety and performance standards to meet the expectations of the Laboratory Agenda.
