Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn Duties: Job consists of taking gas samples throughout the company territory; and analyzing for leak determination, gas quality components, odorant presence, moisture content, and any additional physical characteristics of gas samples, as needed. You will respond on emergency occasions, to gas leaks, disturbances, fres, incidents, burn outs, and dispatched requested calls, including off hours and weekends. Gas analysis work is typically performed at the gas laboratory located in Greenpoint but may occasionally be done in the feld. You will work closely with many other departments supplying analytical services as requested.
Key Accountabilities
- Taking gas samples throughout the company territory.
- Analyzing for leak determination, gas quality components, odorant presence, moisture content, and any additional physical characteristics of gas samples, as needed.
- Respond to emergency calls, gas leaks, disturbances, fires, incidents, burn outs, and dispatched requested calls, including off hours and weekends.
- Perform Gas analysis work in the gas laboratory located in Greenpoint and occasionally in the field.
- Work closely with and support many other departments supplying analytical services as requested.
- Prepare detailed written reports of all testing and analysis.
- Develop expertise in the use of a wide variety of testing equipment and keep abreast and pace with new testing methods.
- Travel to various company locations and conduct FedEx hazmat shipping training.
- Participate in storm restoration when required.
- Attend Incident Analysis (IA) meetings as a neutral subject-matter expert.
- Participate in the yearly review and revision process of department policies and procedures.
Note: Chemists are required to be on 24hr/7 day call out rotation schedule as well as respond to emergency overtime.
Qualifications
- A working knowledge of Gas Distribution, Gas Operations, LNG/CNG operation, and Customer Field Services with respect that these are our primary customers and know how each department affects National Grid.
- Technical and mechanical skills involving fitting work and field equipment.
- Experience working with sophisticated instrumentation and field equipment.
(Ex: Bascom Turner CGI, DETX Odorameter, Dewpoint Analyzers, etc)
- B.S Degree in Chemistry or related field, accredited laboratory certification, or laboratory experience desired but not required.
- Previous analytical laboratory experience would be beneficial; training would be furnished.
- Experience working with live gas at LP/HP facilities or gate station environment.
- Working knowledge of computers utilizing MS Works, Excel, Word, and Access would be helpful.
- Ability to travel, when working outside our jurisdiction (DNY) is required.
- Worked with compressed gas cylinders, to move, connect, regulate, and monitor pressure safely.
- Quality control/assurance background desired but not required.

As such, the Company’s testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
