About the role

Summary

The Department of Pediatrics Division of Tropical Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to work in the Laboratory. The purpose of the position will conduct advanced molecular and vector biology research focused on understanding gene function and host-pathogen interactions in ticks. This position is responsible for designing and performing RNA interference (RNAi) and CRISPR/Cas gene-editing experiments, investigating protein–protein interactions, and supporting tick feeding and pathogen transmission studies in rodent models. The Research Associate will collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams to integrate experimental findings and contribute to the development of innovative strategies for vector-borne disease research. Responsibilities also include analyzing data, preparing scientific reports, manuscripts, and presentations, and disseminating research findings through publications and scientific meetings.

Job Duties

  • Design and conduct RNA interference (RNAi) experiments to investigate gene function in ticks, including dsRNA design, synthesis, delivery (e.g., microinjection or other applicable methods), and downstream assessment of gene silencing efficiency.
  • Develop and implement CRISPR/Cas-based gene editing strategies for ticks, including guide RNA design, delivery optimization, screening of edited individuals, and validation of gene modification outcomes.
  • Design, execute, and optimize molecular biology assays like qPCR, qRT - PCR and investigate protein–protein interactions. These techiques include co-immunoprecipitation, pull-down assays, and yeast two-hybrid systems.
  • Collaborate with team members including bioinformaticians, structural biologists, microbiologists, and in vivo research groups, to integrate findings into broader research objectives.
  • Perform tick feedings and transmission studies.
  • Prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations summarizing experimental findings for internal stakeholders and external publication.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.  Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral or Masters degree.
