The team embodies Crunchyroll’s collaborative spirit and works closely with various internal teams to engineer scalable solutions to delight our internal and external partners and passionate Anime fans worldwide.
About You:
You are an experienced leader leading multiple parallel teams and initiatives responsible for advertising video-on-demand (AVOD) and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming. You have a deep understanding of video streaming technologies, content delivery networks (CDNs), and related technologies and a consistent record of leading teams and driving innovation.
Your background is highly technical, and you have been in hands-on technical roles in video engineering, building workflows, and designing distributed systems focusing on software performance and resiliency, and a strong interest in the latest technologies. You have built high-scale and secure encoding workflows to deliver best-in-class video experiences globally.
You take an active role in leading and fostering innovation in the video space. You are responsible for scaling the platform for continued growth, innovating and implementing critical fraud and security defenses, and architecting the system for high availability in a continuously evolving domain. You enjoy working in a team to solve hard problems related to Video. You also enjoy advocating for improvements across the engineering teams you work with.
- Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 7+ years in a senior leadership role (Director or higher) focused on designing, building, and delivering video encoding/streaming platforms
- Fluent in hands-on management of agile development and delivery management
- Experience establishing an architectural vision and developing robust and scalable software products or platforms using modern technology stack
- Experience developing important metrics, standards, and procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality video delivery
- Experience with modern architectures, designs, and standardized methodologies, including API gateways, microservices, micro frontends, and technical design
- Experience in developing Video Infrastructure using Public Cloud such as AWS and/or GCP
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish relationships at all levels
- Able to assess situations and opportunities to make decisions quickly and expertly
- Significant experience mentoring and coaching managers and engineers
- Ability to transform complex business problems into simple, elegant technical solutions
- Define both short-term and long-term technical strategies for your team to optimize video quality, minimize buffering, and ensure seamless playback across all devices and platforms
- Stay up-to-date with emerging video standards and formats, and evaluate their potential impact on our business and technical infrastructure with a focus on enhancing video quality while minimizing file size and bandwidth usage
- Work with content partners and vendors to ensure compliance with DRM requirements and implement robust security measures to protect against piracy and unauthorized access and ensure optimal performance and cost-effectiveness
- Develop and maintain deep knowledge of compression codecs such as VP9, AV1, and VVC, and make recommendations for their adoption as appropriate
- Develop and implement processes for analyzing video performance data and using insights to optimize encoding and transcoding settings and improve overall video quality
- Work closely with product and design teams to define innovative solutions for video experiences and ensure they are compatible
