Job Description:

The VP of CCOR has comprehensive oversight and full functional ownership of consumer credit review program policy. They are responsible for providing an independent view on the key consumer credit risks of the firm's consumer lending practices. These responsibilities are in support and under the oversight of the overall Corporate Risk Management framework and system.  The VP oversees the strategic planning, scoping, and execution of independent periodic credit reviews across all consumer credit products and the full credit life cycle. Additional responsibilities for this area include the monitoring of the performance of the consumer lending product portfolios (cards, personal, student and home equity loans) and reviews of credit risk strategies and communication of consumer credit risk appetite, tolerance, and thresholds.

Position works closely with first line business leaders, credit risk management, collections and loss forecasting to ensure alignment of strategy, risk appetite and performance of credit and loan loss provision. This position also works closely with the following committees in providing oversight of credit risk: Discover Bank Credit Committee, Credit Card Lending Committee and Consumer Lending Committee. This position has significant exposure to the board of directors, senior leadership and regulatory agencies based on risk management and operational accountabilities.

Creates a culture of effective risk management, accountability, and demonstration of risk awareness across the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Set vision, own, and oversee strategy of the Consumer Credit Risk Oversight and Review (CCOR) team in the development, management, maintenance, reporting (framework for analytics and reporting), execution of the consumer credit risk reviews and oversight of appetite, tolerance, and thresholds. This includes the awareness of consumer credit and collections strategy and the implications of changes in strategy to the profitability of the enterprise.

  • Oversees the strategic planning, scoping and execution of independent periodic credit reviews and effective challenge across all consumer credit products and lending life cycle. This includes an evaluation of the adequacy and accuracy of lending decisions, consistent application of risk policy and credit procedures, analysis of underwriting and collections standards and practices, and determination of an overall assessment of asset quality and risk management practices.

  • Provide oversight and continuous monitoring of 1st line credit risk management activities including strategies across all consumer lending products and their impacts. Identify credit risk related trends, assessing impact of changing macroeconomic and industry trends assessing their impact on the appropriateness of our strategies and asset quality. Reports findings and ensure transparency through appropriate established governance processes working with business to address findings.

  • Periodically review and monitor the Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL), working with the Chief Credit Officer and Finance Department to ensure that identified credit risk trends and assumptions are adequately considered in the estimation of the ACL.

  • Interacts with senior executives, governance committees and regulators (FDIC, FRB) to provide (both orally and written) risk management reporting, analytics, and findings in a complete and concise manner. This interaction includes the development and syndication of new strategies and practices required to improve risk management and operational efficiencies.

  • Provides leadership, mentoring and development to credit review and credit risk oversight team. Collaborate and build relationships with the different program participants.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Statistics, Analytics, Information Technology, or Business

  • 12+ years of experience in credit risk management including analytics, modeling and risk process frameworks at a large financial institution or similar industry experience required  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in economics, Statistics, Analytics, Information Technology, or Business

  • 15+ years of Consumer credit
