Polk County Utilities provides safe drinking water, wastewater collection and treatment systems to nearly 68,000 accounts in unincorporated communities throughout the county. In some service areas, this division also provides reclaimed water.

Polk’s Utilities program:

Produces and distributes 18.9 million gallons of drinkable water each day

Collects and treats 8.6 million gallons of wastewater each day

Produces and distributes 7.4 million gallons a day of reuse water for irrigation

Responded to nearly 23,000 Sunshine One Call requests in 2022 to identify locations of utility lines

The Utilities Division also works closely with agencies such as the water management districts, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and other municipalities in Polk to provide for future demand through planning and water conservation measures.

 

Starting Pay Grade: PG-14 $23.03 Hourly, Non-Exempt

Pay Progression: $23.03 to $33.39 Hourly, Non-Exempt

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

•              Performs electrical repairs and preventative maintenance on control system in a water and wastewater environment with multiple critical processes. 

•              Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs controls and instrumentation as needed to upgrade and update obsolete equipment including incoming electrical services. 

•              Test motors, generators, lighting, and power distribution systems. 

•              Troubleshoots and repairs motor controls.

•              Troubleshoots and repairs controls and electrical on heavy industrial equipment including drives, generators, up to 4,160-volt power distribution equipment. 

•              Maintains and troubleshoots large horsepower motors. 

•              Calibrates control equipment to factory specifications including flow meters, pressure transducers, temperature transducers, and vibration sensing equipment. 

•              Tests and performs preventative and predictive maintenance on motor control systems and AC/DC motors. 

•              Troubleshoots equipment using PLC controls using ladder logic diagrams using PLC controls and electrical run sheets. 

•              Uses technical manuals and prints to isolate and repair wastewater control systems. 

•              Maintains and updates an effective electrical maintenance PM program ensuring all equipment is maintained on a periodic schedule in a timely manner. 

•              Calibrates and maintains instruments including, pH meters, CL2 analyzers, DO meters and other instruments using a 4-20ma control signal. 

•              Repairs and maintains an extensive lighting protection system in support of building maintenance. 

•              Install new conduit, boxes, and panels and pull wire to code as needed to support equipment upgrades.

•              Duties may vary based on area of assignment; performs other related duties as required and assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS 

•              Ability to see colors, ambulate independently, bend, stoop, sit, drive from work site to provide plant maintenance inspections and to lift up to forty (40) pounds. 

•              Ability to speak in a manner that can be understood and make written notations/prepare reports/perform mathematical tasks. 

•              Ability to work with and around various chemicals with proper PPE. 

•              Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination. 

•              Ability to use multi-hand and/or foot controls. 

•              Ability to plan and work from oral and written instructions.
