We are looking to hire someone to work in our Columbus, Ohio office with a hybrid schedule (2 days/week in office, moving to 3 days/week in September)
We’re seeking a strong people leader who can drive process improvements and foster cross-functional collaboration in this newly created position. Team needs someone with utilities industry experience and complex property tax filings experience.
Job Summary
The Manager of Indirect Taxes is responsible for reviewing and maintaining work papers supporting non-income tax accounting calculations, compliance filings, journal entries, and payments. The Manager reviews monthly non-income tax entries, forecasts annual and 5-year plans for non-income tax liabilities (e.g., sales and use, property, and other relevant taxes), and ensures adherence to regulatory and internal standards.
Essential Functions
Reviews and approves non-income tax computations, accruals, and journal entries for various taxes such as sales and use tax, property tax, and other applicable non-income taxes.
Ensures accurate and timely filing of consolidated state and local non-income tax returns and related business filings.
Coordinates the preparation and maintenance of work papers, schedules, and supporting documentation for compliance and regulatory reporting.
Works closely with accounting, financial planning, regulatory, and operations teams to address and resolve non-income tax–related issues.
Leads internal and external audit preparations by ensuring proper documentation and timely responses to inquiries related to non-income tax matters.
Develops, documents, and implements robust internal controls and procedures to improve non-income tax processes and mitigate risks.
Leads diverse team of qualified individuals and has the authority to hire, terminate, promote, demote, coach, develop and performance manage.
Prepares and reviews non-income tax forecasts by developing appropriate assumptions and performing variance analyses.
Monitors legislative and regulatory changes affecting non-income tax requirements and proactively adjust internal practices to maintain compliance.
Oversees interactions with automated tax systems and ERP software (e.g., Oracle or SAP) to ensure accurate integration and reporting of non-income tax data. Experience with ONESOURCE Indirect Tax Determination strongly preferred.
Identifies and drives process improvement projects aimed at streamlining non-income tax operations and enhancing overall efficiency. Proven ability to collaborate with external service providers and direct outstanding results within scope of services.
Required Qualifications For Position
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent
At least 5 years of public accounting and/or corporate tax experience at a publicly traded company, with a focus on non-income tax compliance (e.g., sales/use, property, and other similar tax regulations)
A minimum of 2 years supervisory or people management experience
Strong analytical, tax technical, and research skills.
Excellent organizational abilities with a track record of managing multiple assignments and delivering accurate, timely work products.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
Proven ability to collaborate with external service providers and direct outstanding results within scope of services.
Demonstrated working knowledge of GAAP accounting and non-income tax practices.
A collaborative approach to problem-solving with the aptitude to build consensus on recommended solutions.
Proven ability to tailor communication for Senior Leadership, peers, and junior staff while fostering a collaborative environment.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
Exposure to additional tools (e.g., Alteryx, Tableau)
Experience with automated tax systems (e.g., ONESOURCE Indirect Tax Determination) and ERP platforms such as Oracle or SAP
Utility industry experience
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire
