Senior Hydrodynamics Engineer
AndurilAbout the role
Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century’s most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril’s family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
Anduril is fielding the next generation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to tackle the extremely challenging industry demands of seabed exploration. Anduril has brought to the market a unique, ultra-long-range, full-ocean-depth platform and a completely refreshed maritime vehicle and flexible manufacturing architecture that scales from "large" to "extra-large" vehicle sizes. Today, Anduril is executing on multi-million-dollar contracts while simultaneously performing Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) AUV operations.
ABOUT THE JOB
As our Maritime team continues to quickly grow, we are looking for a Senior Hydrodynamic Modeling and Simulation Engineer to join the team. In this role, you will utilize your knowledge of hydrodynamics to develop, implement, and maintain hydrodynamic virtual representations of our current and future undersea vehicles and identify ways to improve mission success. You will collaborate with a motivated, creative, and innovative team that is passionate about subsea robotics and exploring the open ocean.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Architect and develop simulation tools in order to understand how our subsea products perform in a variety of scenarios
- Develop and implement hydrodynamic modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities that capture appropriate data during testing so that models can be updated and validated
- Rapidly iterate on M&S capabilities during test periods; collaborating with the GNC team to maximize field test
- Simulate and Test data analysis tools and processes
- Create test and simulation fixtures that operate with both software- and hardware-in-the-loop
- Work with multi-disciplinary subject matter experts to understand and adequately model pertinent sub-system, system, and system of system dynamics
- Work with internal and external customers to understand simulation requirements and develop efficient modeling and simulation solutions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, ocean engineering, or related technical discipline, with a focus on hydrodynamics or aerodynamics, or equivalent work experience
- Experience in Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis engineering or related technical experience
- Experience creating hydrodynamic databases from water tunnel test, wind tunnel test, or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
- Experience in sea trials test planning for performance, stability and control, and propulsive load characterization
- Experience extracting hydrodynamic coefficients from test data
- Liaise with other engineering functions (structures, GNC, propulsion, controls, payloads) to diagnose and remediate design issues
- Experience building computational meshes for CFD analysis
- Proficiency with scientific computing systems (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink) and scientific Python (e.g., NumPy, SciPy)
- Familiarity with C++ and/or Python
- Experience with Subsea vehicles and/or aerospace/aeronautical systems (including rotorcraft/VTOL)
- Experience with developing sub-system and system level models (undersea vehicles, air vehicles, ground vehicles, ground based sensors and other types of complex systems)
- Experience with model development to support Guidance, Navigation and Control algorithm development
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Expertise in modeling and simulating complex hydrodynamic systems in marine environments
- Advanced proficiency with C++
- Experience with computer programs used to analyze wave interactions such as WEC-Sim and WAMIT
- Experience with SITL and HITL simulation infrastructure design, development and deployment for complex systems
- Experience with developing emulated/simulation interfaces for on-board avionics
