Assistant/Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Program

Job Description Summary

The Department of English, Music, and the Arts in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Allied Services at Saint Leo University invites applications for a full-time faculty member holding a Ph.D. in Music or Music Education (with a specialization in Voice or Choral Studies) or a D.M.A. in Voice or Choral Studies from an accredited institution. Experience in musical theatre would be appreciated. This position is a 4/4 course load, with one course release for Director of the Choral program. This position is to support the Chair of English, Music, and the Arts in the design and implementation of music events throughout the academic year; ensure curriculum alignment with university requirements; collaborate with Chair in managing music program budget and oversee maintenance of facilities, equipment, and music copyright; and serve as the subject matter expert. The individual will also engage in teaching, research, development, and community outreach activities. Bilingualism is not required, but considered an asset for enhancing international student recruitment and engagement, especially in a campus community of diverse global backgrounds. Applicants with a minimum of three years of collegiate-level teaching experience in both applied and classroom settings is preferred.

Job Description

DUTIES AND TASKS:  

Teaching and academic duties

• Instruct courses in music including any combination of the following: General Education, choral conducting, other music major courses, Saint Leo Singers, Saint Leo Chamber Singers, private lessons (majors).
• Experience in providing individualized vocal instruction with a strong emphasis on vocal development, technique, and repertoire.
• Experience in directing full-scale music performances, including musicals and opera at the collegiate level or in professional settings.
• Maintain accurate student records and submit grades in a timely fashion.
• Deliver and update course syllabi as needed.
• Assist in curriculum evaluation and suggest improvements as needed.
• Hold semester auditions for Saint Leo Chamber, Saint Leo Singers and incoming music majors.
• Hold regular office hours and support student learning.
• Advise students, particularly those at risk.
• Contribute to new course development or revisions to the minor.
• Supervise internships and independent studies.
• Manage schedule for music juries in the department.

• Administrative and Community Engagement

• Advise students during registration.
• Attend faculty, college and department meetings.
• Participate in orientation and professional development workshops.
• Engage in community outreach activities with the Chair.
• Collaborate with Chair in developing annual academic events: Faculty Music Showcase, Fall Recital, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, Tunes n’ Bloom.
• Engage in student recruitment and retention efforts for the music program.
• Develop community partnerships with community organizations, high schools, and arts institutions to support outreach and collaborative programming.
• Attend graduation. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: 

• Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, preferably in a B.A in Music or A.A. in Music program.
• Experience developing music courses.
• Experience with application of technology in teaching, particularly use of the D2L learning management system.
• Demonstrated ability in the recruitment and retention of students.

Skills: 

• Excellent campus, online and/or hybrid teaching.
• Demonstrated success with teaching and learning strategies.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively.
• Demonstrated excellence in solo vocal performance and professional contributions in the field: Judging community music performances, conducting.
