Associate Director, Project Development

Location: Remote
The Associate Director of Development shall be responsible for the leadership of a regionally structured project development team. The regional project development team is responsible for the advancement of all facets of project development within its region, and the Associate Director of Development shall manage, facilitate, and support the regional project development team in its efforts. Responsibilities include directing or executing work to complete activities associated with project development as well as coordinating with the Business Development and Finance teams on opportunities ranging from greenfield and early-stage development to commercialization-ready projects in the North American market.
Responsibilities
• Strategy and Leadership
o In coordination with the Steelhead Leadership and Extended Leadership Teams, develop and execute regional, department and company-wide strategy with respect to regional project development
o Engage with cross-functional teams to support the overall growth of the Steelhead portfolio
o Escalate proposals for decision to Steelhead Leadership
o Support the professional and knowledge growth of team members
o Champion a team culture rooted in problem solving and risk identification, management, and mitigation
• Management, Communication and Reporting:
o Lead a team of developers responsible for the origination, risk identification, and maturation of renewable energy development projects
o Manage and support consistent project information tracking via internal tracking systems and reports.
o Articulate risks associated with projects while safeguarding development budget and schedule and anticipating upcoming major decisions
o Inform and collaborate with cross-functional teams on a regular basis
o Maintain working relationships and communication with internal business development, engineering, wind resource, real estate, construction, sales, service, legal, finance, and other subject matter teams
• Development and Project Management:
o Promote the growth of knowledge and proficiency of regional development team members in the fundamentals of renewable energy development, including land acquisition, landowner negotiation, greenfield development, project due diligence, risk identification, management, and mitigation, interconnection study processes and Generator Interconnection Agreement negotiation, and community engagement
o When necessary, manage and personally facilitate the advancement of renewable energy project development efforts within the region, including land acquisition, landowner negotiation, greenfield development, project due diligence, risk identification, management, and mitigation, interconnection study processes and Generator Interconnection Agreement negotiation, and community engagement
o When necessary, manage or facilitate communications and negotiations with external stakeholders, including but not limited to contractors, community members, permit agencies, utilities, and other stakeholders, including oversight of local, state, and/or federal permitting processes
o Oversee and, when necessary, manage consultants - for example, environmental, engineering, aviation, and biological consultants on projects - including engagement, contracting, scope management, invoice review and approval, and discontinuation of efforts
o Oversee and, as appropriate, manage and represent Steelhead in the negotiation of key project agreements such as Road Use Agreements, Conditional Use Permits and Tax Abatements
o Oversee and, as necessary, facilitate contracting for pre-construction activities such as preliminary geotechnical investigation and preliminary engineering.
• Business Development
o Participate in portfolio-wide commercialization strategy formulation with Leadership and Extended Leadership Teams
o As needed, coordinate due diligence, review seller-provided materials, and provide risk assessments for acquisition opportunities
o Support Business Development in executing attractive growth opportunities effectively, including development investments, acquisition and joint ventures and eventual project sales
o Contribute to pipeline commercialization by being a knowledgeable resource on the essentials of project development, engaging in conversations with prospective project sponsors, and overseeing the efforts of the regional project development team
• People and Culture
o Serve as the reporting manager for multiple direct reports - typically between three and six
o Coordinate with leadership and the People and Culture Team regarding team management issues, as necessary
