About the role

Overview

The Specialty Pharmacy Team Leader serving in a clinical capacity shall be responsible for maintaining a clinical practice and the supervisory oversight of pharmacy staff, processes and clinical programs to assure successful execution of all activities related to the pharmacy department.  A key role of this position includes staff communications, human resource management, planning, supervision, mentoring, and coordination of clinical workflow to enhance productivity.  The Team Leader will enhance the delivery of the clinical pharmacy services through the development of a personal clinical practice, development of the clinical abilities of the staff, and education of the pharmacy students/residents. The Team Leader shall also be able to deliver quality health care as a staff pharmacist. 

Responsibilities

  • Human Resources Management
  • Provides supervision and mentoring of employees and manages workflow and the execution of clinical activities for the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Communicates effectively with all pharmacy employees through regular interactions (eg, staff huddles, email, and one-on-one meetings with direct reports).
  • Conducts annual competency assessments and performance evaluations for pharmacists and technicians by the assigned deadlines.
  • Assists with administrative call responsibilities with the other Pharmacy Team Leaders and Managers.
  • Ensures orientation and training for employees
  • Interviews, selects, hires and retains employees
  • Planning and development
  • Assists the Pharmacy Department Managers and Director in setting departmental goals and implementing projects that advance clinical and distributive pharmacy services. Utilizes time management and communication skills to execute assigned projects by the assigned deadline.
  • Assists the Pharmacy Department Managers and Director in implementing revisions to the pharmacist and technician staffing schedules/grids to adjust for census, workload, and to achieve departmental goals and strategic objectives outlined in the RMC Operations/Clinical Action Plan
  • Compliance
  • Has working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Assists the Managers in ensuring both clinical and operational procedures are in compliance with federal, state, local, regulatory and accrediting
  • Performance Improvement
  • Participates in performance improvement activities with a focus on medication safety and work process improvement. Documents investigative follow-up on reported medication events and provides feedback to employees directly involved in medication events/errors.
  • Manages staff performance and compliance with both clinical and operational pharmacy policies and procedures, and regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Executes employee accountability process up to and including termination
  • Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals, 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision
  • DCH Standards:

    • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
    • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
    • Must adhere to the DCH Mission, Vision, and Values including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
    • Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors and employees.
    • Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors and employees.
    • Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors and employees.
    • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
    • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Must hold a current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama. Must be an Alabama pharmacy preceptor or eligible. The candidate must have developed an area of personal clinical practice, contributing regularly to patient care, and has exhibited a commitment to maintain a level of practice beyond that required of staff practitioners.

     

    This position requires a:

    • S. or Pharm.D. Degree required, with
      • Completion of an ASHP Accredited PGY1 Residency and a minimum of 1 year hospital experience (2 or more years preferred)
      • 3 or more years of hospital experience in a unit based/decentral area
    • Prior experience precepting pharmacy students or supervising pharmacy technicians or pharmacists
