General Description and Classification Standards
Provides support to nursing staff (RNs or LPNs) in performing tasks associated with screening detainees and in providing routine treatment services in a detention center clinic. This is a medical support position. Use of this class should be restricted to a medical clinic setting only and positions should exist only where nursing or other medical professional positions are also present and filled.
Supervision Received
Works under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.
- Collects and records vital signs from patients.
- Collects fluid samples from patients and processes in accordance with protocols and accepted medical standards.
- Cleans wounds, changes dressings, and provides other assistance as directed.
- Cleans work areas and ensures appropriate supplies are stocked.
- Maintains records of work performed as required by process and medical protocols.
- Provides direct assistance to nurses, physicians, and other medical personnel in treating patients.
- Stabilizes or restrains patients when required.
- Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Assists medical staff in emergency response.
- Documents medical information and maintains secure records location for those files.
- May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.
- May perform other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of basic clinical and medical processes appropriate to an institutional clinic setting.
- Reading and writing skills appropriate to medical records and clinic environment.
- Ability to communicate with potentially difficult or impaired patients.
- Ability to collect blood and other fluid samples in accordance with proper medical practice and in an efficient manner.
- Ability to follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent with completion of an approved course of study and qualification as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Medical Assistant.
- One (1) year of work experience in medical/clinical support in an institutional or hospital setting.
Preferred Education & Experience
- The minimum education requirements, plus one (1) year of related work experience in a detention center, jail, or prison.
- BLS (Basic Life Support Certification) and Phlebotomy Certification/ Training.
Licensures and Certifications
Certified by the appropriate organization or board to work as a nursing aide, medical assistant, clinical assistant, or related health discipline.

Lifting Requirements: Light work | Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
