Role Summary:
The Strategy & Business Development team at Sun Life U.S. collaborates with senior members of the U.S. business to identify and develop strategies that address key opportunities and challenges and provides strategic advice and counsel to the President of Sun Life U.S. and other business leaders. The team is also responsible for managing the annual Strategic Planning process, ensuring coordination across all U.S. business units and functional groups.
The Vice-President, Strategy & Business Development also works with the President of Sun Life U.S. and the U.S. P&L leaders in identifying and evaluating merger and acquisition opportunities, developing the strategic rationale, operating model and business cases for potential acquisitions.
This role supports the President of Sun Life U.S. in organizing and managing discussions with key leadership groups including the U.S. ET, the U.S. Leadership Council and the U.S. P&L Leaders, in preparing and submitting materials to the Board of Directors and in communicating quarterly and annual results to the GLT, the Board and to shareholders.
This role requires strong leadership, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to influence and drive strategic initiatives across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Business Units to develop and communicate strategies in partnership with our Corporate Strategy office for the U.S. organization.
Anticipate changes in market dynamics, competitors and technology, to create insights and industry-leading strategies for our businesses.
Lead the U.S. Business to identify and evaluate opportunities for mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions. Develop business cases, strategic rationale and operating models, and manage due diligence process in partnership with the Corporate Development team.
Facilitate and support cross-business strategic initiatives collaboration.
Identify, evaluate and recommend strategic cross-business unit opportunities that align with Sun Life U.S.’s overall objectives and maximize value creation across the business.
Support large-scale business transformation initiatives and strategic pivots.
Collaborate with the U.S. CFO and broader Finance organization to integrate strategic planning initiatives.
Manage competitive data and analysis and support corporate and board level reporting, as needed.
Foster a high-performance culture with an emphasis on employee development, innovation, and diversity within the organization. Manage the day-to-day activities of the strategy team, providing guidance, direction, support, and prioritizing work and resources.
Prepare the President and U.S. Executive Team members for quarterly results reviews and investor meetings. Lead the development of Investor Day materials for the U.S. business.
Support the President in organizing and conducting management meetings, including recommendations for content and logistics for U.S. Executive Team meetings, P&L Leaders meetings and Leadership Council meetings.
Qualifications/Competencies and Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 years’ relevant business experience, ideally within healthcare, insurance or financial services; experience in/or knowledge of Sun Life’s business would be an asset.
3-5+ years of experience in Strategy consulting (either external firms or internal strategy groups) would be an asset.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience leading teams of high-performing employees.
University degree in business or related discipline; MBA or other relevant post-graduate degree would be an asset.
Confident presence with senior management and interpersonal skills,
