About the role

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Office Manager, the Coder/Nursing Intake Specialist provides effective utilization of ICD10, HCPCS and CPT to ensure proper diagnosis coding of all MHH patients. Provides services related to the initial intake of the admission process, gathering information which enables the agency to determine the patient has a qualified need for admission to the home health program. Assumes the day-to-day responsibility for receiving information and coordinating the paraprofessional’s schedule. Functions as a primary contact for referral services, as well as calls from physicians regarding patient orders and lab results. Provides administrative assistance and nursing support for the office by providing a wide range of complex duties, including patient scheduling, record -keeping, filing, computer work and receiving orders. Possesses a high degree of computer knowledge and interpersonal skills when dealing with Associates/Organizational departments, patients/family members, insurances, physicians, vendors and others as needed. Demonstrates proficient communication, organization, and work management skills in a highly confidential and sensitive nature. Provides utilization review for appropriateness of patients per guidelines according to established criteria. Contributes to the achievement of the mission and philosophy of the Organization. Contributes to the effective operations of the Organization by demonstrating dependability in job performance. WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Works in a well-lighted, ventilated and air conditioned area when in the office. Able to properly use telephone, computers, and other office equipment. Schedule may consist of weekends, holidays and shift work. Excellent observation, communication, and problem solving skills as well as basic math skill and nursing skills required. Visual acuity and hearing to perform duties. Must be able to work under some pressure, due to exposure to a high degree of interruption, stressful situations, and time restraints/deadlines. Must have the ability to adjust to job situations that involve confidentiality of patients, Associate records and payroll practices. Requires independent action and judgment. Must be able to deal with controversial factors in the office and over the phone in connection with agency procedures.

 

Physical endurance for prolonged periods in a stationary position are required. Must be able to move, position, and/or transfer patients, supplies and equipment. Risks exposure to disease, infection and physical strain and assault. Risks exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue. Must be able to move, position, and/or transfer patients as well as supplies and equipment. Must be able to move or position 50 lbs. independently.

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:

Patients, patient’s families, physicians, general public, vendors,

 

auditors, state licensure offices, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, nursing, and other Organizational departments. Should be pleasant, conscientious, objective, tactful, diplomatic and responsible. Other Case Management Associates.

 

EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Word processing computer skills are required. Utilizes communication skills with a high degree of effectiveness in working with patients, families, physicians, hospital personnel and referral agencies. Possesses skills necessary to work effectively with other disciplines. Should possess knowledge of community, social, health and welfare programs.

Qualifications

Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a nurse.
