Principal Engineer, Systems & Cloud

The Principal Engineer will lead the technical management and optimization of production and test environments of Babson’s cloud-based infrastructure. As a key technical leadership figure within the Systems & Cloud team, the Principal Engineer will oversee the technical leadership of all aspects of Microsoft 365, Azure, and various components of Microsoft Azure. This role requires a balance of technical expertise with strong technical leadership and strategic management skills to drive continuous improvements, enhance operational efficiencies, and meet long-term organizational goals. The Principal Engineer will also handle IT systems management, cloud cost optimization efforts (FinOps), and compliance mandates, with a focus on reducing technical debt and implementing automated solutions that minimize manual intervention.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical lead for IT projects and initiatives, guiding the engineering team and collaborating with cross-functional teams to streamline operations through automation, scripting, and improved system management practices.

 

Team Collaboration: Lead the technical happenings of a team of engineers providing guidance and mentorship. Foster collaboration between all teams to ensure successful project delivery and ongoing support.

 

Guidance & Training: Act as the subject matter expert in Azure, and M365, offering expertise and training to the team. Proactively identify opportunities for skill development within the team and ensure alignment with best practices.

 

Operational Excellence: Continuously evaluate and improve systems, processes, and team workflows to drive operational excellence. Lead efforts to introduce automation tools and reduce manual tasks to increase efficiency.

 

Documentation & Reporting: Oversee the creation and maintenance of technical documentation and ensure that it aligns with organizational standards. Provide detailed reports on system performance, incident management, and project status to senior leadership.

 

Collaboration with Stakeholders: Engage with other departments, such as PMO and application teams, to provide technical support for new software and application rollouts. Ensure that IT infrastructure meets the evolving needs of the organization.

 

Additional Responsibilities: Take on additional management responsibilities as needed to support the growth and development of the Systems and Cloud Team and its initiatives.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

 

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering or a related field.

 

10+ years of experience managing and implementing, and/or supporting M365 environments, Active Directory Services, Windows Server OS, DNS, DHCP, virtualization, and IT Security.

 

5+ years of experience architecting and engineering technologies such as M365, Azure, Microsoft Entra, including Enterprise Apps, Conditional Access, Role Management, SSO, Azure Financial Operations, and HA/DR implementations.

 

Some management experience in a technical leadership role, including team management, resource allocation, and strategic planning.

 

Some project management experience, resource allocation, and strategic planning.

 

Expertise in automation and scripting (PowerShell) for system management and improvement.

 

Expertise in system design, with a strong ability to lead the team in maintaining secure and compliant systems.

 

Expertise with VMware and virtualized environments.

 

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to propose alternative approaches and evaluate the impact of technical decisions.

 

Knowledge of networking and security technologies (e.g., TCP/IP, VPNs, SSL/TLS, and IPSEC, firewalls).

 

Experience in shared storage solutions and datacenter management.
