About the role
The Merchant role within the Animal Proteins team is a commodity trading position focused on sourcing, selling, and executing trades in the animal protein market. This individual will develop expertise in market analytics, customer engagement, logistics execution, and contract management, all within the context of protein ingredients and feed markets. The role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a passion for building relationships across a diverse customer base—including processors, feed manufacturers, and transportation partners.
Market Analytics
- Learn and apply Scoular’s risk management tools specific to the animal proteins market.
- Monitor protein market trends, including supply/demand shifts, pricing indicators, and global trade dynamics.
- Use Scoular systems (e.g., CTRM) to analyze and report on market conditions.
- Capture supply from protein processors and producers in designated regions.
- Formulate and share market insights with internal stakeholders and customers.
- Ensure trading partners remain within Scoular Trade Finance’s counterparty limits.
- Develop decision-making skills for buying and selling protein commodities.
Logistics & Execution
- Assist or lead logistics planning for protein shipments via truck and rail.
- Understand commodity arbitrage opportunities within the protein space.
- Coordinate with carriers, ensuring timely pickup and delivery of protein products.
- Maintain documentation and systems that support execution and traceability.
Customer Relationship Building
- Build and maintain relationships with protein processors, feed manufacturers, and end users.
- Provide accurate market information and transactional support to customers.
- Gradually expand customer portfolio under manager guidance.
- Manage contracts and reconcile balances with customers.
- At least 2 years of commodity merchandising experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Agriculture, or a related field.
- Proven ability to deliver exceptional customer service and build strong, trust-based relationships.
- Thrives in fast-paced, dynamic environments with shifting priorities.
- Demonstrated expertise in identifying issues, analyzing root causes, and implementing effective solutions.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Willingness and ability to travel as business needs require.
- Solid understanding of grain markets, hedging strategies, and commodity flow dynamics.
- Familiarity with agricultural trading standards, industry regulations, and operational procedures.
- Strong grasp of accounting principles and financial practices relevant to commodity trading
