<h2>Overview</h2> <p><strong>Post Title: </strong></p> <p>Senior Medical Scientist, Histopathology</p> <p><strong>Post Status: </strong></p> <p>Permanent</p> <p><strong>Department </strong></p> <p>Histology</p> <p><strong>Location: </strong></p> <p>Beaumont Hospital or other affiliated sites  </p> <p><strong>Reports to: </strong></p> <p>Chief Medical Scientist</p> <p><strong>Salary: </strong></p> <p>Appointment will be made on the Senior Medical Scientist Scale (€67,334 - €88,901) at a point in line with Government pay policy</p> <p><strong>Hours of work:  </strong></p> <p>35 hours </p> <p><strong>Closing Date: </strong></p> <p>12.00 noon Friday, 07/11/2025</p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>Please note the hospital reserves the right to close the competition early should a substantial number of applications be received.</em></strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Position Summary:</strong></p> <p>The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and technological development and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.</p> <p><strong><em> </em></strong></p> <h2>Responsibilities</h2> <p><strong>Principal Duties and Responsibilities:</strong></p> <p>1        To perform his/her duties under the general direction of the Chief Medical Scientist.</p> <p>2        To perform all aspects of technical work to the highest standard.</p> <p>3        To supervise and provide guidance and support to medical scientists and medical laboratory assistants in the performance of their duties.</p> <p>4        To organise the technical programme so that work patterns are efficiently maintained.</p> <p>5        To carry out routine inspections of laboratory equipment in his/her charge and to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition.</p> <p>6        To collaborate with the Chief Medical Scientist in the maintenance of efficiency and the introduction of new methods in the laboratory.</p> <p>7        To assist in implementing measures for the safety, health and welfare of all the staff.</p> <p>8        To assist in the training of student medical scientists, on call personnel, junior medical staff and visiting workers as required.</p> <p>9        To assist in maintaining the ISO15189 accredited status of the department.</p> <p>10      To represent the Chief Medical Scientist at meetings when required.</p> <p>11      To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge.</p> <p>12      To perform any other duties as may be appropriate to the grade. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <h2>Qualifications</h2> <p><strong><em>Selection Criteria:  </em></strong></p> <p><em>Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.  </em></p> <p><em>Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.</em></p> <p><em> </em></p> <p><strong>Mandatory:</strong></p> <h1>1           PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, ETC.</h1> <ul> <li>Candidates for appointment must possess: </li> <li>Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). </li> </ul> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). </li> </ul> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork – Cork Institute of Technology course </li> </ul> <p>AND</p> <p>Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice. </p> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) </li> </ul> <p>AND</p> <p>Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002). </p> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) </li> </ul> <p>AND</p> <p>BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences, University College Cork (UCC). (Awarded prior to 2013). </p> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to 1994). </li> </ul> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before 1997 by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). </li> </ul> <p>Or</p> <ul> <li>An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM). </li> </ul> <p>And</p> <ul> <li>Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent qualification at mini
