Job Description:

Ready to put your scientific expertise to work in detecting biological threat agents, both natural and man-made domestically and across the globe? We are seeking a Biological Technician I to support and facilitate biological research for the rapid detection of infectious diseases of global importance and the enhancement of global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response. This position resides at Fort Detrick in Fredrick, MD and will support the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) in the Expeditionary Laboratory Operations Department (ELOD).

Responsibilities:

  • Supports research and development, reagent production and quality management of the Expeditionary Laboratory Operations Department (ELOD), including, but not limited to development of tactics, techniques, procedures, and equipment to defend United States Forces against Biological Warfare and Biological Terrorism.
  • Field technical assistance, including training on detection system and interpretation of results from these detection systems and research SME support services including designing new detection assays and updating current assays for new platforms and technologies for the detection and analysis of biological threat agents.
  • Coordination of the Next Generation Detection System (NGDS) proficiency testing programs to include transition to replacement platforms.
  • Support and maintenance for four rapidly deployable expeditionary field biological detection laboratories.

Education/Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a biological science field.
  • Experience:
    • 5 years of practical experience in detection and/or DNA sequencing is considered essential.
    • Must possess a practical knowledge of basic and applied research, including experimental design and methods, and must have demonstrated the ability to perform competent research.
    • Must have demonstrated the ability to independently work on research projects, including data analysis, troubleshooting, and contributing to report writing.
    • Ability to lift at least 50lbs.
    • Familiarization with methods of biothreat detection.
    • Very strong communication and training skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team.
    • Experience in bioinformatics is beneficial but not required.
  • Must currently possess or be able to pass all criteria for a Secret security clearance.

Salary Range: 

$52,700.00 - $92,200.00
