Middle River Aerostructure Systems is a world-leading manufacturer of thrust reversers (the braking system on a jet engine), engine nacelle components and specialized aerostructures. It supplies and supports these products for engine makers, airplane manufacturers and aircraft operators. Located on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay near Baltimore, MRAS has a 1.7-million sq. ft. facility situated on 180 acres – where the company and its predecessors have designed, built and equipped civil and military aircraft for over 90 years. In 2019, MRAS was acquired by ST Engineering North America, the U.S. affiliate of Singapore-based ST Engineering – becoming a part of its global network of aerospace facilities and offices. With the ownership change, the company was renamed Middle River Aerostructure Systems.

 

 

Role Summary/Purpose

The Material & Process (M&P) Engineer serves as a support role for both engineering and operations based activities. This includes working with the various internal functional groups (Engineering team, Sourcing/Procurement team, Quality Organization) and external groups (customers and suppliers) in support of business objectives.

 

The M&P Engineer will work within the Processing Engineering team, on site at Middle River, supporting assigned tasks and responsibilities.  While working under the direction and guidance of experienced engineers, the tasks and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, material testing support, process development, material evaluation, supplier reviews and approvals, and general production support.  This role may interface both upstream and downstream in the supply chain.  

 

The engineer demonstrates an ability work with limited to some supervision, and in collaboration with others, effectively interfacing and integrating their activities within the engineering organization.  An ability to establish and manage multiple work scopes within time constraints is required.  The candidate is also responsible for timely identification and communication of project obstacles to engineering technical leads.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serves as the responsible M&P focal for assigned projects/tasks.
  • Creates engineering test plans/reports and test article fabrication documentation.
  • Collaborates with engineers and others within the business to achieve project objectives.
  • Assists in establishing technical requirements, objectives & timing.
  • Provides technical guidance to internal team members for assigned projects/tasks.
  • Executes plans to achieve defined project and departmental goals.
  • Supports business level meetings for assigned/related projects/tasks, including providing periodic updates as/when needed.
  • Effective, timely, and accurate communication to internal customers, supply chain, and external customers for assigned projects/tasks.
  • Supports materials/technology development projects to support business goals.
  • Limited travel may be required (up to 20%).

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering or equivalent field from an accredited university.
  • Technical background in composites or other similar non-metallic materials-based industry. 
  • Working knowledge of material analysis techniques (microscopy, mechanical testing, physical property testing, etc…)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail with some direct supervision.
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent green card holder.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Aerospace materials processing and testing experience.
  • Six Sigma training is preferred.
  • MS office proficient
