Job Summary:Conducting investigations of allegations against physicians and physician assistants licensed in Arizona, with an emphasis on billing complaints, and quality of care complaints, in addition to other professional conduct violations.
Matters investigated include sensitive issues such as substance abuse and sexual misconduct. Duties that are equivalent to a paralegal, including, preparing and serving subpoenas, case reports, and presenting cases before the Arizona Medical Board.
Testifying before the Office of Administrative Hearings. Prioritizing, planning, organizing, and conducting investigations, including investigational interviews and site inspections, and interpreting statutes and rules.
This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (hybrid schedule).
Job Duties:• Plans, organizes and conducts investigations of complaints regarding alleged unprofessional conduct by interviewing complainants, licensees, and witnesses, documenting testimony, gathering evidence and documentation, including on-site visits and reviewing records and licensee responses received for investigative leads, conferring with representatives from other agencies and creating complete case files
• Perform other duties as assigned, including prepping documents by sorting chronologically and scanning all outgoing and incoming documents, and responding to incoming telephone calls regarding investigations
• Prepare and mail notifications, issue and mail subpoenas, and compose, prepare, and mail correspondence to physicians, complainants, other healthcare providers, and attorneys regarding ongoing investigations
• Prepares a written investigative report to be presented to the Arizona Medical Board and participates in Arizona Medical Board and Administrative hearings
• Document investigative activity by entering data into the database
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):Knowledge of:
• Microsoft Word, Outlook, internet, and database input and retrieval
• Written and oral communication skills with attention to detail
• State statutes and rules governing the practice of medicine
• Medical billing and coding experience is a plus
• Familiarity with medical records review
Skills in:
• Applying and interpreting Federal and State statutes and rules governing investigations and the practice of medicine
• Paralegal training, medical billing, and coding experience is a plus
• Production of timely and accurate reports and documentation
• Presenting cases in a hearing or trial setting
• Handling and prioritizing a large caseload
• Reading and interpreting medical records
Ability to:
• Extract and utilize facts from a variety of sources and apply relevant statutes, rules, and policies to prepare clear, accurate, and quality legal documents within specified time frames
• Conduct investigations, including review of medical records to determine relevance to the investigation, gathering evidence, and conducting investigational interviews
• Multi-task, prioritize, plan, analyze, and coordinate investigations
Selective Preference(s):• A combination of coursework and/or training in the practice of medicine, healthcare, medical malpractice, regulatory law, the techniques and methods of investigating and/or case management, law enforcement/criminal justice, and/or business English and writing
• Five years experience working in a medicine/healthcare regulatory, insurance, law, and/or law enforcement/criminal justice envir
