Job Description
We are searching for a highly motivated computational scientist with a strong background in methods development for image analytics to join the Data & Computational Science (DCS) team at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. You will play a formative role in building the image analytics capabilities within DCS, supporting analysis of high content, multiplexed, and/or materials imaging studies. An ideal candidate should have experience in applying statistical and machine learning methods towards building image analysis pipelines and strong knowledge of software development best practices. You will play a key role in innovating, evaluating, and applying cutting-edge computational methods that will enable us to make rapid, data-driven decisions. As a key contributor you will be expected to work closely with DCS colleagues and research scientists, and Vertex’s Data Technology and Engineering (DTE) group to help in the development of scalable, production solutions. Thus, the ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in image analysis, but also a broad skillset to address data science problems. Proactive communication, and seamless cross-functional collaboration will be required for success in this role.
This is a Boston, MA based hybrid/onsite position requiring 3 days/week onsite.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop novel computational methods and pipelines for imaging data across modalities to address key questions for quantifying biological assays.
- Identify, evaluate and adopt custom image analytics and AI/ML methods from external sources
- Lead rigorous computational analyses of imaging and other biological data while developing new approaches.
- Collaborate with project teams and DCS members to identify key needs and questions that can be addressed using image analytics
- Collaborate with project teams across the company to enable best practices for image data analytics with a strong motivation for data integrity and data provenance.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Expertise in development of image analytics method for high-content, multi-plexed, or materials imaging
- Expertise in the use of image analysis toolkits (e.g., scikit-image, OpenCV)
- Hands-on experience in customizing ML/AI methods (scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow) for applying image analytics for feature extraction, characterization, classification and prediction.
- Experience with analytics and statistics of high dimensional data.
- Strong programming skills, ideally in Python
- Experience with version control (Git), and cluster compute (HPC/AWS)
- Excellent communication skills that can be tailored to scientists with or without computational biology expertise
- Demonstrated ability to work across cross-functional teams, ensuring timely progress

Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in computer science, computational biology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or a related field and 0-3 years of productive, relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
- MS (or equivalent degree) in similar fields and 3+ years of productive, relevant employment experience, or

Pay Range:
$101,200 - $151,700Disclosure Statement:
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
