Job Summary
Must be proficient in all aspects of routine histology, special stains and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Will prepare slides from tissue and other specimens from inpatient, outpatient and doctors’ offices for examination by Pathologists. Will have primary responsibility for the Histology laboratory’s immunohistochemistry staining ensuring IHC staining operations are in compliance with all CAP accreditation requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Biology from an accredited college/university
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of full time experience in an accredited laboratory including experience in fixation, microtomy, processing, embedding, routine staining, special staining and immunohistochemistry
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): 5 Years of experience can be substituted for completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program with 3 years full time experience in an accredited laboratory including experience in fixation, microtomy, processing, embedding, routine staining and immunohistochemistry;
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Biology can be substituted for a Bachelor's Degree with a combination of 30 semester (45 quarter) hours of biology and chemistry.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Must have a HTL(ASCP), MLT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), or equivalent certification from a nationally recognized credentialing body;
ASCP Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (ASCP QIHC) or equivalent from a nationally recognized credentialing body.
Required Training: None.
Essential Functions
- Understand the grossing process to include how specimens are accessioned, grossed, triaged, and fixed to enable trouble-shooting of specimen problems in histology and immunohistochemistry.
- Process tissue on automated processor using appropriate processing cycle.
- Embed processed tissues into paraffin, selecting proper size base mold and correctly orienting tissue.
- Cut paraffin embedded blocks and prepare tissue slides for staining using appropriate protocol for number of slides and depth of sections.
- Perform routine staining of tissue slides by manual or automated methods.
- Prepare tissue slides for immunohistochemistry and special stains and maintain appropriate controls. Help to manage the control slide and block inventory to ensure proper control tissues and slides are available and utilized correctly.
- Perform immunohistochemical and special staining of tissue slides by manual or automated methods using appropriate control slides. Be able to trouble-shoot stains and assist with the implementation of new antibodies and stains as needed.
- Prepare a variety of solutions according to written protocols. Make dilutions of antibodies and reagents.
- File blocks and slides by accession numbers for easy retrieval. Ensure that blocks and unstained slides are organized and retrievable when needed.
- Ensure that daily logs and task worksheets are maintained.
- Ensure that routine maintenance and cleaning of all instruments is performed and documented. Troubleshoot laboratory equipment, as appropriate and solicit help from Bio-Med or vendors as needed.
