Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators, and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.

DESCRIPTION

The Construction Inspector will serve as a key member of the firm’s growing construction management discipline by working as an part time employee of the Ontario, CA office. 

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Inspect work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects during various stages of construction and/or reconstruction including construction of streets, bridges, water systems, sewers, subdivision and commercial street improvements, landscape maintenance, encroachment activities and grading; check line, grade, size, elevation and location of structures; ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Monitor work of staff responsible for taking samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories; review tests of construction material including asphalt, sand, gravel, concrete and aggregate base; monitor draining, cleaning and disinfecting distribution reservoirs.
  • Monitor the work of soil engineers and geologists; ensure conformance with engineering specifications; perform routine materials and density field tests. Inspect traffic signal construction and installation and street light installation to ensure conformance to appropriate standards.
  • Inspect underground utility construction including sewer and storm drainage, trenching, shoring, dewatering, bedding for pipe, manhole construction, trench backfill and testing; oversee decision making for connecting, testing, tapping, disinfecting and installing water mains.
  • Inspect street surface improvements including survey staking, subgrade preparation, soil stabilization, spreading and rolling of asphalt and resurfacing of curbs and gutters.
  • Prepare detailed documentation of construction progress and inspection; prepare various reports on daily operations and activities. 8. Perform cost control; recognize potential cost increases and provide alternatives, recommendations and solutions. 
  • Observe work during progress and upon completion; recommend progress payments and enter into pay books as necessary; confer with developers, contractors, superintendents, inspectors, and owners; ensure that safety procedures are followed; advise contractors of changes in plans and variances; collect water samples for analysis as necessary.
  • Monitor contractors, sub-contractors and developers through all phases of construction to insure compliance with all City standards and municipal code requirements; monitor incoming messages regarding dig alert and respond as appropriate when assigned. Conduct final inspections; review as built drawings; compile final inspection correction list and inspect corrections. Represent the contracting entities needs and requirements to developers, contractors, and engineers; review plans and specifications to gain familiarity with construction projects.
  • Confer with property owners regarding project schedule, hazards and inconvenience; schedule service interruptions with the least interference and least inconvenience to property owners.  
  • Coordinate work and interact with other City departments and outside agencies

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree in Construction Technology or related field of study is preferred
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and conceptual thinking skills
  • Possess strong math skills, including algebra and geometry for determining areas and volumes
  • Willingness to commute to construction projects in varying locations, work in all weather conditions, varying shifts, and weekends
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work independently for periods of time
  • Ability to prioritize project assignments to meet competing deadlines
  • Attention to detail and effective decision making and organizational skills
  • Ability to provide support to local office, as well as availability to occasionally travel to other office
