A Day in the Life

As a Senior Electrical Engineer working in Surgical Robotics at the Medtronic, you will be part of a team who develops the electronic hardware for the Robotics Center of Excellence. You will work with other team members in developing, testing, integrating, verification, validation, and production transfer of sophisticated electronic systems.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Derive electronics specifications from system and subsystem requirements

  • Design and verify electrical circuits for communicating with and controlling a complex mechatronic system.
    • Circuitry will involve digital and analog circuit design, microprocessor / DSP / FPGA selection, and custom PCB design.
  • Design models and execute simulations. Analyze results.
  • Develop, document, and execute test procedures and protocols.
  • Design and develop test firmware for custom PCBAs.
  • Design and test custom printed circuit boards and cable assemblies.
  • Advise technicians and interns to assemble, bring up, verify and debug prototypes. 
  • Define requirements for, select, and document commercial off-the-shelf components, such as power supplies, motherboards, and networking equipment.
  • Prepare and participate in design reviews.
  • Interface with systems engineers to define requirements and perform troubleshooting / testing.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to develop requirements and perform hardware / software integration.
  • Coordinate with quality engineer on development of DFMECA and component derating studies.

Must Haves

  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)( 4)(iii)(A) and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have

  • Medical device product development, regulatory process, safety, e.g., IEC 60601
  • Previous experience with robotics
  • Knowledge of firmware / embedded software development is desirable.
  • Usage of FPGAs/CPLDs; knowledge of VHDL or Verilog (VHDL preferred).
  • Optoelectronic data communication expertise
  • Ability to review PCB designs, fabrication/assembly data and to bring up, debug and test custom designed electronics
  • Independence and self-motivation – we are looking for a self-starter with an autonomous working style
  • Skills in strategic thinking, problem solving attitude, good planning and time management
  • Ability to work in teams – we are looking for a team player!

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.
