Open Rank Professor and Chair-Department of General Dentistry

The University of Tennessee Department of General Dentistry is, seeking a full-time tenure or non-tenure track Open rank Professor and Chair Professor of General Dentistry within the College of Dentistry position includes providing oversight and strategic direction in the areas of clinical simulation and clinical content within the dental school pre-doctoral curriculum. The Department oversees the AEGD program and its external sites.  The position requires the development and implementation of organizational strategies and policies. The successful candidate for this position will be a strong leader possessing the ability to identify and implement best practices, think strategically, plan for the long-term success of the college and effectively delegate tasks and foster a positive work environment and culture. The Chair works closely with the Associate and Assistant Deans & other department Chairs within the College of Dentistry. 

 

1. Recruits, hires, and mentors of faculty in the Department of General Dentistry.
2. Coaches junior and senior faculty in conducts basic and/or clinical research and other scholarly activities that will help them qualify for appropriate promotion. This includes providing sufficient time, close monitors, and regular encouragement for these activities.
3. Works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in curriculum development and implementation.
4. Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in developing and implementing clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record.
5. Partners with informatics personnel to optimize technology use in supporting general dentistry teaching programs.
6. Coordinates didactic and clinical activities with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
7. Oversees all academic programs among clinical disciplines within the department both at the school and community service-learning centers.
8. Manages accreditation processes and other program documentation as needed.
9. Represents the Department of General Dentistry at meetings of the College of Dentistry Executive Committee, appropriate campus meetings, hospital meetings, and other meetings as needed.
10. Responds to local and national requests for information related to didactic and clinical programs.
11. Works closely with directors of advanced general dentistry programs to ensure high-quality comprehensive general dentistry experiences for all residents.
12. Participates in budget planning for the department to ensure staffing, equipment, and funding meet mission requirements.
13. Assists the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance, improvement, and compliance efforts.
14. Develops and delivers state-of-the-art continuing education programs in general dentistry on a regional, statewide, or nationwide basis.
15. Develops curriculum content, delivers lectures/seminars/workshops, supervising clinical training sessions, evaluating student performance through assessments/exams/practical evaluations, advising students on academic/career matters, integrating new teaching methodologies/technologies.
16. Leads research initiatives within the department by fostering a collaborative research environment, securing funding through grants, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and promoting interdisciplinary research projects.
17. Performing other duties as assigned by the Dean.

EDUCATION: DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an ADA-accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE: 

• Broad knowledge of issues in dental education.
• At least five years of full-time general dental clinical experience in dental education at an institutional level working on program development leading to a dental degree.
• Demonstrated ability to apply contemporary dental education experiences to community service learning center models.
• Demonstrated record of increasing leadership responsibilities preferably as a program director, division head or chair.
• Experience building teams to identify and resolve problems.
• Qualifications to be appointed at associate professor or professor level.

LICENSES:  Eligibility for dental licensure in Tennessee (TN dental license must be secured prior to employment).

DEPARTMENT PREFERENCES:

• Completion of an AEGD or GPR residency.
