About the role
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on manual machines such as mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill sharpener, tool post grinder and shapers
- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine as required
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
- Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly - Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance
- Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts
- Operates metal cutting band saws and chop saws
- Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be machined or fabricated
- Confers with Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Leads, Maintenance Techs, Engineers, production personnel or others to resolve machining or related problems
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND ABILITIES:
- 3-5 Years of Machining or a related field
- High school or Trade school machine shop diploma or equivalent
- Must work with moving mechanical parts
- Able to work overtime and any schedule needed for production support
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow instructions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., repeatedly if necessary
- Able to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time
- Able to sit, kneel, squat or bend, for long lengths of times
- Ability to meet daily, weekly and monthly deadlines
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Strength and Endurance:
- Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy parts and equipment, often in the range of 50–75 pounds or more.
- Physical stamina to stand, bend, kneel, squat, and work in awkward or tight spaces for extended periods.
- Climbing ladders and working at heights may also be required for accessing machinery.
- Manual Dexterity:
- Skilled hand-eye coordination to use various hand tools (wrenches, drills, screwdrivers, etc.), power tools, and precision instruments.
- Ability to handle small parts or components with care and accuracy.
- Mobility and Agility:
- Ability to move quickly between different areas of the facility, often in response to breakdowns or emergencies.
- Work in varied environments, such as confined spaces, elevated platforms, or areas with limited lighting or space.
- Vision and Color Recognition:
- Good vision, including the ability to distinguish colors, particularly when dealing with electrical wiring or machinery indicators.
- Visual acuity to inspect machinery, tools, and equipment for wear or damage.
- Manual and Physical Coordination:
- Ability to assemble and disassemble machinery, aligning parts, fixing bolts, or troubleshooting parts under pressure.
- Frequent use of both hands and sometimes specialized tools to perform tasks.
- Environmental Tolerance:
- Tolerance to various work environments (dusty, hot, cold, noisy) often found in manufacturing settings.
