Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lab Hardware Manager to join our Data Center Operations team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with HP, Dell, and IBM hardware, including clustered servers, blade systems, and storage solutions. This role focuses on the physical installation, cabling, and maintenance of hardware and includes responsibilities for firmware updates, networking, and storage connectivity, particularly in fiber channel SAN and high-speed interconnect environments.
Responsibilities
Capacity Planning & Forecasting
- Work closely with development teams to identify current and future infrastructure needs.
- Develop capacity models and forecasts based on business growth, usage trends, and emerging technologies.
- Plan for compute, storage, and networking resources to ensure optimal performance and scalability.
- Analyze historical data to predict infrastructure demands and optimize resource utilization.
Lifecycle Management & Equipment Reuse
- Maintain an inventory of existing hardware and assess opportunities for reuse before new purchases.
- Develop hardware redeployment, upgrades, and refurbishment strategies to extend asset life.
- Work with IT and data center teams to ensure decommissioned equipment is evaluated adequately for repurposing.
- Minimize unnecessary expenditures by prioritizing reuse, optimizing refresh cycles, and reducing e-waste.
Budgeting & Cost Management
- Collaborate with finance teams to create budget estimates for hardware procurement and infrastructure expansion.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities by leveraging lifecycle management and existing resources.
- Provide financial justification for infrastructure investments and present proposals to senior leadership.
Approval & Stakeholder Management
- Work with upper management to obtain necessary approvals for infrastructure purchases and expansions.
- Communicate technical requirements and capacity planning strategies in business terms to non-technical stakeholders.
- Maintain alignment between infrastructure strategy and business objectives.
Space, Power, and Physical Layout Planning
- Plan and allocate physical space within data centers to support hardware deployments.
- Work with facilities teams to ensure proper power and cooling requirements are met.
- Optimize hardware placement for efficiency, redundancy, and scalability.
Process Improvement & Documentation
- Develop standardized capacity planning methodologies and best practices.
- Maintain documentation on forecasting models, infrastructure plans, and approval workflows.
- Continuously evaluate new technologies and trends to improve capacity planning processes.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in capacity planning, infrastructure management, or IT resource forecasting.
- Strong understanding of hardware, networking, and data center operations.
- Experience with budgeting, procurement, and financial planning in an IT environment.
- Excellent organizational and project planning skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and capacity planning software.
Preferred
- Experience working with cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) frameworks such as ITIL.
- Familiarity with automation and monitoring tools for capacity planning.
