Role Description
Position Summary
This position will provide care for animals in a research environment at the Lincoln, NE site. Species of responsibility are dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, cattle but may also include cross-support with other species. The Technical Associate is responsible for supporting high-quality animal care and operational excellence within the facility. This position encompasses all aspects of animal care, including but not limited to husbandry, enrichment, and training procedures. The technician plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant environment for both animals and colleagues. In addition to performing and assisting with standard laboratory and facility tasks, the technician ensures that animal welfare standards are upheld according to established protocols and regulations. This position also involves collaboration with research staff and participation in facility improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and dedication to continuous learning and professional development.
Position Responsibilities
- Responsible for all aspects of animal care, including but not limited to husbandry, enrichment, and training, to ensure optimal health and well-being of animals following all Standard Operating Procedures and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide and document species-appropriate environmental enrichment, behavioral observations, and animal training as instructed.
- Assist or perform general facility and equipment maintenance, including cleaning, sanitizing, and routine upkeep of animal rooms, laboratories, and support areas.
- Monitor and replenish husbandry, facility, and testing supplies and reagents within the work area.
- Assist with clinical procedures.
- Maintain clean and organized workspaces and contribute to overall laboratory cleanliness and biosafety compliance.
- Perform basic aseptic laboratory procedures, supporting studies and testing according to training and SOPs.
- Accurately complete all required documentation, logs, and records in electronic or paper formats as per regulatory requirements.
- Learn and comply with all institutional policies, safety standards, SOPs, and documentation practices relevant.
- Collaborate with veterinary, technical, and research staff to maintain high standards throughout facility operations.
- Participate in continuing education and training sessions to enhance animal care knowledge and technical skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the facility and research program.
Education and Experience
Required
- High School Diploma or GED and valid driver’s license.
- The candidate should possess excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills. Basic computer skills required.
Preferred
- Two or four-year degree in a science-based field.
- Animal behavior and husbandry experience.
Technical Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in performing animal husbandry and comprehensive care procedures for companion animals, as well as small and large animal species.
- Skilled in safely administering vaccinations and performing phlebotomy and other sample collection techniques.
- Demonstrates strong teamwork, work ethic, and a positive attitude in all tasks and interactions.
- Able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
- Possesses basic computer skills necessary for documentation and data entry.
Physical Position Requirements
- This role requires the ability to alternate between standing and seated tasks throughout the workday.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically active duties such as animal handling, facility cleaning, and equipment maintenance.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and stooping are necessary to accomplish daily tasks.
- Some work will be performed outdoors as required by facility operations or animal care needs.
