This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility vehicles and equipment.  Includes, but is not limited to passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV’s, medium and heavy trucks, trailers and off road equipment. Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES and Duties

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections on light & medium duty vehicles/equipment and assist higher classification of technicians with  PM’s on all vehicles and equipment. Perform required State emission inspections. Assist with Federal DOT inspections. Adhere to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections. Provide assistance on dielectric test inspections.

  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on light and medium vehicles, (gas & diesel) forklifts, trailers and powered equipment. Maintain the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment.  Perform hydraulic brake systems and component repairs. Assist with hydraulic component repairs. Assist with air brake system inspections and repairs. Assist higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair basic electric system components, cranking, lighting, charging and assist with basic A/C systems and component repairs.

Basic Qualifications

  • Two year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school

  • 1 year related work experience

  • In lieu of required degree, High School/GED and 2 years of work experience

  • Class A CDL license within 6 months of hire date

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous Duke Energy intern experience

  • Electric Utility Fleet Experience

  • Basic Hydraulic Experience

  • ASE Certifications

  • AWS Welding Certifications

  • Effective communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with peers, customers and management

  • Demonstrate ablility to make sound decisions, exercising good judgement and setting priorities

  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Experience with computer equipment, laptops, keyboard, tablets, etc.

List the working conditions of the job (e.g., environmental - temperature, noise, office, plant, field;  physical - lifting, prolonged sitting; schedule - shift, call-out, outage response, etc.).

  • Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time

  • Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices

  • Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift

  • Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet

  • Repeated bending and twisting is required
