The Health Careers Division at Harper College is actively seeking a student-centered diverse pool of candidates to fill a full-time faculty position specializing in the field of Health Information Technology. Successful candidates will assume responsibilities that encompass a broad spectrum of courses, encompassing, but not restricted to:
- Healthcare Data Structure, Content, and Standards; Health Information Protection, Analysis, and Technology
- Pathopharmacology for Health Information Professionals
- Revenue Management, Compliance, and Leadership; Health Care Reimbursement
- CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) and ICD (International Classification of Diseases) Coding; Advanced Medical Coding
- Electronic Health Records for Health Information Systems; Health Care Information Analysis
- Law for Health Information
- Health Information Technology Externship
The Health Information Technology program mission is to prepare diverse, active learners equipped with the technical, collaborative, and communication skills required to meet the evolving needs of the workforce as entry-level health information professionals. With an emphasis on experiential learning, students are provided with the theory and training in the skills essential to equipping students to ensure the quality of medical records, analyze patient data to improve patient care, and control costs across healthcare settings. The program also prepares students for opportunities in organizations that use patient data or health information, including pharmaceutical companies, law firms, and medical product vendors. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), the A.A.S. HIT degree can be completed in 21 months for full-time students or at a flexible pace for working adults, with a curriculum covering both data management and revenue cycle management at advanced levels.
The successful candidate will be able to teach a wide variety of courses to students of diverse backgrounds and varying levels of college readiness using traditional and alternative delivery methods. We encourage interested candidates to familiarize themselves with our course offerings. This position teaches a standard load of fifteen (15) credit hours per semester (30 credits per academic year) health information courses. This may include reassigned release time to be given for coordinator duties. Classes may be offered in day, evening, and/or online modalities.
Schedule Information: The successful candidate is expected to teach 30 contact hours each year in the Health Information Technology (HIT) program. In addition to teaching 30 contact hours per academic year, a full-time faculty member serves on departmental, divisional and institutional committees; holds six office hours per week (some of which must be on campus); and pursues professional development opportunities related to discipline and pedagogy. Evening and weekend instruction or meetings may be required. Instruction may take place face to face, online, blended or flex formats. Currently, all courses are offered in an asynchronous online modality.
Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May) – We seek a full-time colleague to begin in January 2026.

Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification
Experience Requirements: The following are preferred knowledge, skills, and experiences for a successful candidate:
- Current medical coding experience (CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS)
- Experience using 3M encoder and grouper software
- Previous teaching/training/tutoring experience in HIM/HIT content areas
- Online course design and online teaching
- Familiarity with learning management system such as Blackboard
- Experience with CAHIIM accreditation reporting and standards in Health Information Management
