Role Purpose

Join Corning’s Science and Technology Division as a Mechanical Sr. Technician and help shape the future of materials science and advanced technology. In this role, you’ll support innovation across diverse markets- ranging from optical communications and advanced displays to life sciences and energy – by supporting technical teams with mechanical design and assembly work, including creating, refining, and documenting parts and assemblies.

You’ll collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and technicians—sharing knowledge, communicating clearly about assignments, and helping teams narrow solution pathways through disciplined execution and practical problem-solving. Your contributions will show up in high-quality experimental builds, measurements, analyses, and the technical documentation that keeps programs moving.

Key Responsibilities

  •     Design and validate mechanical prototypes in partnership with scientists and engineers, applying core engineering principles
  •     Create, update, and release mechanical CAD models and drawings to support builds, test setups, and documentation
  •     Build, assemble, and modify prototype hardware, fixtures, and test apparatuses to support experimental execution
  •     Construct, calibrate, adjust, test, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment, components, devices, and mechanical systems
  •     Execute complex assignments requiring sound judgment and initiative to diagnose issues, resolve problems, and recommend solutions
  •     Determine methods and procedures for new assignments, working with limited supervision and general direction as needed
  •     Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including optics, electronics, materials, and manufacturing to support system-level builds and test execution
  •     Document technical work, communicate results to stakeholders, and contribute to intellectual property disclosures as appropriate

Required Education

  • Technical degree plus significant (5+) years of industry experience designing and validating mechanical prototypes in partnership with scientists and engineers
  • Ability to create and update mechanical CAD models and drawings (SolidWorks or similar) with good configuration and documentation discipline
  • Experience constructing, calibrating, adjusting, testing, and maintaining lab/prototype equipment and mechanical/measurement systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including practical root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
  • Ability to plan and execute experimental work, collect accurate measurements, and maintain high data quality and traceability
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills when working with scientists, engineers, and technicians across disciplines
  • Strong safety mindset and consistent adherence to safe work practices in lab, shop, and test environments
  • Ability to work with limited supervision on routine work and determine methods/procedures for new assignments with general direction

Desired Experiences

  • Advanced proficiency with specific CAD toolsets and drawing release practices (e.g., drawing check practices, workflow management using design file vaults)
  • Experience with metrology and measurement systems (e.g., CMM, optical metrology, profilometry, laser alignment, ultrasonic inspection)
  • Experience with precision mechanical design concepts (tolerancing, thermal/mechanical stability, vibration considerations, alignment)
  • Experience with milling/machining, a
