Upper School Learning Specialist

Latin School of Chicago is hiring an Upper School Learning Specialist starting fall 2025.

The Upper School Learning Specialist primarily serves students who are diagnosed with learning differences but also serves as a consultative resource for faculty/staff and parents/guardians, and serves as a liaison with independent diagnosticians, therapists, and tutors. The primary goal of the Upper School Learning Resources program is to assist students as they become successful, independent learners and strong self-advocates.  The program is available to all students and is designed to ensure that students are able to make use of the full range of school-based resources. 

Job Responsibilities

• Provide direct learning support to a caseload of two grade levels alongside the other US Learning Specialist. Support can include but is not limited to: organization and time management, note-taking, reading comprehension, and learning and study strategies.
• Collaborate to assist students in their development with the student support team, faculty, advisors, enrollment management team, and other members of the community
• Develop and facilitate academic support services and accommodation plans
• Coordinate school-based testing with accommodations
• Consult with faculty about learning strategies for specific students 
• Initiate referrals regarding learning evaluations and serve as a liaison between the school and external resources
• Oversee the application and appeal processes for obtaining accommodations on standardized tests
• Manage special testing throughout the year for Latin students
• Facilitate related meetings and necessary staffings with students, families, faculty and independent professionals
• Engage regularly with students regarding their academic performance and planning, coach and counsel students for academic success, maximizing potential and self-advocacy
• Confer with parents/guardians regarding student needs and provide outside referrals when appropriate
• Support families on matters that impact learning and academic achievement
• Assist in the development of related faculty professional development programs and opportunities 
• Partner with diversity, equity and inclusion team to provide ongoing support and programming for students and families from traditionally marginalized communities
• Demonstrate cultural competence to students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds
• Engage in middle school to high school transition planning and participate in admissions committee
• Participate in monthly student support team meetings to assess overall progress and recommend appropriate supports for individual students
• Attend faculty meetings and appropriate divisional professional development workshops
• Work closely with the Division Director and Assistant Upper School Director to address learning-based concerns/needs

• Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation:

• Salary is $64,622 - $114,967 annually, based on education level and years of experience as outlined in our Faculty Scale.

• Master’s degree in special education or a closely related field
• Familiarity with current trends and strategies for differentiating instruction at the secondary level
• Knowledge of SAT/ACT/PSAT accommodation procedures and procedures for appeal
• Experience in an educational setting preferred
• Experience with psychoeducational and neuropsychological testing
• Background in student advocacy in instructional situations and a high level of competence in the us
