Job Summary

The Director of Major Projects is responsible for the safe execution of a single mega project or a portfolio of several projects by adhering to project management guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure programs and projects are delivered on time and within budget. Accountable for project life cycle management, including scope & estimate development, project planning, business case development support, engineering deliverables, regulatory testimony support and long-range planning. This position relies on capable, integrated leadership skills and the ability to successfully collaborate with stakeholders, including engineering, projects controls, supply chain, environmental, regulatory, strategy, internal engineering, architect engineers, accounting, operations, contractors, and more. The Director of Major Projects will assist in assembling and filing Regulatory responses concerning capital project development, capital project execution, and Regulatory recovery with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

The Director will be a proactive leader who integrates and collaborates with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes. Highly developed organizational, leadership, communication, and technical skills are required. The Director will staff, plan, direct, control, and be responsible for the execution and control of assigned projects to ensure the desired success criteria is achieved.

This position will report to an organization that is primarily focused on the execution of new generation projects, but this group will also execute other large complex projects such as synchronous condensers.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Displays leadership and support to provide a safe work environment.

  • Maintains industry, regulatory and economic knowledge in order to ensure alignment of corporate strategies within the current business environment.
  • Responsibility and oversight of applicable department finances.
  • Applies, and advances Project Management and Project Controls capability and competence using industry standards (AACE, PMI, Construction Management Industry, etc.) and best practices application to integrate knowledge areas for optimum project delivery.
  • Follows Organization Project Management (OPM) principles in the project life cycle including project development, engineering, construction, testing, turnover and technical support.
  • Develops and communicates business cases and project progress to executives.
  • Defines and administers staffing resources required to effectively execute projects, programs, and initiatives.
  • Manages staff to help develop project estimates, budgets, preliminary schedules, risk identification, and scope.
  • Coordinates business planning and Asset Management processes with project development to ensure that utilization of the company's assets are maximized.
  • Provides strategic guidance and timely information to project teams in order for balanced decision-making in regard to risks and execution.
  • Oversees the organization and oversight of the execution of projects, programs, and initiatives.
  • Ensures scope planning, requirements, and scope definition are complete.
  • Ensures optimum use of WBS and cost account management methodology to establish integrated project baseline development, and integrated scope change control methods. 
  • Develops and applies performance metrics to monitor the progress of projects, including the identification and reporting of project performance challenges and risks.
  • Directs life cycle project change control to prevent scope creep or degradation of quality.
  • Supports preparation of various reports (i.e., financial, reallocation, reconciliation, forecasting, accruals, updates, etc.).
  • Supports the NIPSCO Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).
  • Develop, communicate, and ensure lessons learned and best practices are implemented with their team and the projects they manage.
  • Develop trusted relationships with team and stakeholders that are necessary for consistently achieving desired results.
  • Proactively identifies and manages risk for the successful execution of assigned projects, programs, or initiatives.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Bachelor’s degree
