Job Summary:
Provides input and direction to strategic plan and goals to meet imperatives. Manages and oversees an significant span of control of HIM operations. Provides vision, leadership and operational oversight for area of responsibility within a specific area. Develops departmental policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with Joint Commission, federal, and state guidelines. Provides input for process design and other implementation and solution activities. Prepares budgets and maintains and manages cost control. Collaborates with departments and medical staff to ensure strategic alignment and objective achievement. Evaluates and interprets HIM variances and trends to strategically align HIM operations. Seeks to understand disagreements, ensure all perspectives are heard and facilitate a plan for resolution. Delegates the work appropriately, provide clear expectations and follows up to ensure progress and overcome roadblocks. Identifies associates and team priorities based on business direction and adjust when needed. Leads by example and share knowledge and experiences with associates and team. Creates a respectful work environment where you advocate for your team, create accountability, and recognize their accomplishments. Provides timely feedback to encourage success, ensure accountability, and connect opportunities for your associates' development. Identifies the right talent to achieve the desired results. Promotes and builds a diverse cohesive team to accomplish objectives and align associates' skills to fill gaps.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education/experience: Required
- Master's degree: Preferred
- Seven years' of HIM operations experience, including Epic system experience/electronic health record (EHR) conversion experience.: Preferred
- Five years' leadership experience: Preferred
- Current permanent U.S. work authorization.: Required
Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator: Required
Essential Functions:
- Guides and directs subordinate supervisors/managers on HIM team. Set performance plans and engages in crucial conversations, where needed. Develops and implements policy and procedure recommendations to meet the needs of the health and hospital system and its patients. Oversees preparation of the budget for areas of responsibility.
- Prepares annual statement of goals and objectives in collaboration with subordinates. Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local government, and private industry mandates. Ensures staff are aware and compliant with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, etc.
- Analyzes and identifies patient access service needs to determine appropriate action and make recommendations for problem resolution or procedural changes as needed. Identifies issues, risks, barriers, and opportunities for improvement related to set responsibility area. Analyzes, interprets, and summarizes pertinent revenue cycle data components, and monitor performance against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Helps to set/advise on department benchmarks and aids in setting department/staff level action plans to achieve targeted performance.
- Develops professional and technical skill set in subordinate staff and develop ongoing training and education materials for staff and patient education. Supervises, trains, develops, and motivates subordinate staff. Oversees HIM coding functions to ensure positive revenue cycle management. Supports Adventist's coding vendors to confirm system access for remote staff and the running of discharge not final coded (DNFC) reports, analyzing the output for areas of opportunity and holding parties accountable.
- Manages the release of information services throughout the corporation, including necessary court appearances. Interacts with selected vendors and evaluates performance and satisfaction of contractual obligations. Ensures the proper safeguards are in place to avoid breaches and unauthorized disclosures. Ensures the release of information department hits its revenue targets and works with any vendors to find ways to increase revenue on an annualized basis.
